Where to begin? Electrical...issues.

Anyone have a clue how I should tackle this? I'm a first time airstream renovated with average technical ability but I can usually figure things out. Looks like they put the battery under the head. I'd like to move to side storage compartment for easier access and make this safer. Wife and 4 kids will be traveling and I really don't want to cut corners. Here is where I'm thinking of going. I had the same problem with my 69 Tradewind. If you notice their was probably a small plastic hose that went from the battery container to the rear door for venting the old lead acid battery. I switched to gel batteries which allow you to pretty much relocate them (within reason due to the main dc feed line to the front of the trailer. The dc breakers are located in the front overhead compartment behind the barometer and clock assembly. The rear streetside locker is a good relocation point because the wiring passes through this area and it is large enough for the battery, the converter and a new fuse panel. That is also where the old ac/dc converter was located. From the picture it looks like the old converter was replaced with a newer version. The fuse panel in the rear compartment can be replaced with a newer version. Vintage Trailer Supply has the one I purchased for a little less than forty bucks. You will have to backfeed a few of the dc lines from the rear compartment (in the space under the bathtub) to the side locker which is where you want to locate the new fuse panel. The only thing you may have to give up is the ammeter shunt which is the flat copper bar on the old panel. It allows for the meter readout on the front display panel. I would suggest upgrading to a new digital version of a battery monitor for your system. Good Luck whichever way you decide to go with this project.

Hi,
Your converter has been upgraded at some point but clearly not a multi stage if you care about that and you should if you carry batteries. Might be an old Todd, hard to tell from the pic. Tom is correct that you need to upgrade that fuse board, at least I would if it were mine. What I don't agree with is Gel batteries, they are harder to charge. He might have meant AGM which is fine. Good luck.
