What a nice set of improvements. The tambor closures and plumbing look great!

Nice improvement on the rear compartment and potential for return of rear end sag!

Regarding the Tambour doors...I am sure you will make those look and operate great. I just have always found them difficult to open and close and decided to get rid of them all.

Horizontal Tambor Door in Bath

I always like the "pats on the head" from you folks. Thanks.

The 75 Overlander has all tambor doors except for the wardrobe closets. Oh yes, and the entry door. Like aluminum extrusions, the tambor doors were popular with Airstream designers back then. And why not. Light weight and cheap to make. They looked pretty good too. I think of an old roll top desk. My old 66 Trade Wind didn't have any tambor doors. Neither does my son's 69 Globetrotter. I don't know when they first appeared in Airstream trailers.

Here is a photo of yet another interesting aluminum extrusion Airstream designed for tambor doors. Every tambor door in my Overlander has this extrusion as the "finger grab" for opening and closing. Neat.

I "rebuilt" the horizontal tambor door in the bath vanity cabinet. I had to resize it to fit the new narrower distance between the upper and lower tracks. I learned a little about these magic doors.

As you guys know, there are molded plastic spirals on each side that the tambor material rolls up in. It is important there is no dirt or debris in the spirals. It is important there are no sharp edges in the spiral grooves, in the aluminum extruded tracks, or on the tambor slats. Everything has to be smooth. And it is important the tracks are parallel to each other so there is no binding.

I put the tambor door back together and tested it in the vanity. It works smoothly like it likely did from the factory. If my buddy happens to sit on the plastic vanity top, the tambor tracks will squeeze together and the door will jam. This is the case with my galley cabinet. The horizontal tambor doors jam because the galley cabinet has "collapsed" some through the years, like me! I've got those to rework also. The vertical tambor doors in the overhead lockers and floor level storage areas tend to work better. Gravity is a friend of vertical tambor doors.

Here are some photos of the horizontal tambor door in the bath cabinet. Now on to the next thing.

David

PS: Does anyone know if the plastic spirals are available for purchase anywhere? I need a couple in the galley. They are key in making a tambor door.

David. Your spirals are different than the ones I have. Mine are brown and look more like a lollipop with the spiral extending down a single track. I don’t have a picture of them handy but if it sounds like what you need I will send you as many as you need.

Thanks for the tip on Woodworkers Supply. I'll take a look. Or maybe what Jeremy has will work. My trailer is 5 years newer, but I did see what looked like a "lollipop" in some of the sites I looked at. I need to make a horizontal tambour door about 30" high and about 36" wide. It is a lot of tambour material to coil up. I have none of the parts for this door. The PO installed cabinet door there instead. It is under the cook top and cutting board. The space has the furnace and water pump in it.

Assembling Bath Parts

We got about 8" of snow today. Always fun to be in the shop working on the Overlander on a snowy day.

I've been making and finishing simple bath parts. Today I assembled the big vanity support board "fascia", the vanity cabinet shelf, and the reworked tambour door. These parts seem to fit okay and assembled strong.

Now I will make a wood "fascia" for in front of the bath tub. I also will make a "cabinet" behind the toilet. This area used to be a "dirty clothes hamper" but I deemed it mostly useless. I'm going to use the space for something else.

I'm almost ready to water test the new bath vanity sink and drain circuit to the black tank.

Can't wait to see everything put together!

We may get our first snowfall tommorow morning. Then again to be safe, they are announcing everything : snow, rain and freezing rain( I guess they forgot about hail )

We (ok,my husband)are working on the cabinet doors. They are going to look nice.

David. Here is the "lollipop" tambour door guide that I have. These doors rolled top to bottom rather than side to side and were under the gauchos and in the overhead cabinets in the kitchen. The left and right are different so they need to be paired. I have bunches if you want them.

Hi Jeremey: Yes, those are similar to the ones I have for the overhead lockers and under bed, gaucho storage areas. Thanks for the offer, but I don't need those. My vertical tambour doors all work.

I need a set of BIG horizontal spirals similar to the little horizontal ones in the bath vanity. This galley horizontal tambour door under the cook top is maybe 30" high and 36" wide. My galley vanity is nothing but tambour.

I think Airstream liked tambour doors as well as they liked aluminum extrusions, melamine laminated MDF and thermo formed plastic parts. I think it was in the interest of being a different, lightweight travel trailer. I don't think it was necessarily being cheap. It was a $14k sell price back then, likely more expensive than many other similar sized travel trailers. I like the way my Overlander is built compared to my old Trade Wind and also to my wife's Limited. All Airstreams are interesting in their own way.

I guess I don't like the extra weight in the rear of the trailer, and of course the rear body sealing, plumbing and electrical systems are old obsolete designs, the oven in the wall, . There are better ways to do it in 2018. I'm trying to make improvements as I go.

Chrisetmike: I'll post photos when the bath is together. But it is going to be very underwhelming. Yours is nicer. Nothing fancy about my bath, but it will work for us. It is Airstream's original parts for the most part.

Hello Jeremy: Color of the spirals won't matter as a $5 rattle can will solve that one. If you have a big set of two, I'd be interested. They might be 8" in diameter. Big spirals.

I've spent time making the "facade" for the side of the bathtub, and making a "cabinet" behind the toilet. Airstream has a folding padded cushion that folded out and down over the toilet seat. I guess it was all the rage to hide the toilet back then. My old Trade Wind had the toilet hidden in a fiberglass console with a thick cushion on top of it. The previous owner didn't notice it was leaking like a sieve. Out of sight, out of mind. The wife's 86 Limited doesn't have any of that nonsense. I'm just going to make a little storage space behind the toilet that will be easy to disassemble to access a bit of plumbing back there.

I'll post more on these little improvements later...

David

Two Bath Cabinets Done

I've been busy rebuilding two bath cabinets. One was behind the tambour door. The shelf and divider were warped badly, so I simply replaced them. The other was behind the toilet. It used to be a clothes hamper "sack" holder and a bi-folding padded seat. I simply used the space to make a storage cabinet.

Let's see. I have more storage in the old battery compartment, more storage at the rear of the trailer where the plumbing was, and more storage behind the toilet in the new cabinet. More little improvements.

My wife the job boss is happy. She now has room to store a Costco "hay bale" sized bundle of toilet paper. You just have to have at least 24 rolls on board when traveling in the Airstream, for a three night trip. Yes boss.

The next job is reinstalling the "seam" aluminum molding around the bathroom. There is a lot of it.

He REALLY cares…

Flowers, Jewels, Candies, all pale in comparison to a case of TP. Somehow it's perceived as the greatest affirmation of love.

Women… ?????

I'm no good at understanding a woman's motivation. I've never tried a pack of TP on Valentine's Day. There is always a first time I guess.

I do know I have a lot of strange habits that are as equally puzzling. Especially my fondness of vintage aluminum, aluminum extrusions and pumpkin pie. I've had three pieces today already.

I hung some extruded molding to hide seams in the bath plastics after too much pumpkin pie and whipped cream. Trying to work it off so to speak.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone

Bath Extruded Moldings Installed

There were 8 pieces of the gold color anodized extruded moldings to install. The purpose of the moldings is to hide the seams in the six plastic bath parts. I still have the white rubber inserts to install that will hide the rivets. Kinda neat the way Airstream designed and built this bath.

Now that it is fully assembled, the bath parts are much stronger. They feel quite solid. Maybe I could sit on the plastic vanity?

The next step is setting the toilet and testing it for leaks.
