Wood veneer repair?

As much as I take care of it, I am dismayed to see some of the Ash veneer in my trailer is cracking. I have oiled it regularly and in general it looks good but the small cracks and resulting chips that come off are so brittle...I know more are in my future

Has anyone redone the veneer? Or have you found an effective product to keep it in better condition?
Hoping there is something out there for the wood..

no answers to this above post; ok but
What about removing the entire wall that separates the mid-bed form the kitchen? The cabinet will have to come out and it runs over the bed and into the bathroom also. The wall needs to be re-skinned with veneer or new plywood.

Any suggestions for how to get the wall reskinned?

It might be better to just replace it.

Use the old for a pattern and buy some new lumber veneer plywood. Finish it and install.

Nearly 50 years of hot/cold/moisture/dry is pretty tough on any lumber....

Regards,

JD

+1 on replacing the panel with new material.

As a cabinetmaker myself it would be almost impossible to sand down the old material flat enough to guarantee that no oil contamination would effect adhesion of the new veneer.

New finishes and lacquers have a host of UV protection for any new gable replacing the old one.

Cheers
Tony

I have gone as far as to strip old veneer from the ply - sand smooth and apply new veneer. a router will help any weekend hack produce pro results when doing veneer work. if necessary use old ply as template and veneer new ply.

its the getting the bulkhead wall out part that concerns me. The cabinet runs though the bedroom into the bathroom. Once I get all that apart I should be able to use it as a template.

For wqhatever it's worth, there are really good PSA veneers on the market today. If you cleaned the old panel with either mineral spirits, or paint thinner, make sure it's dry.
Then use a veneer hammer and apply the new PSA material over the old bulkhead.

I won't promise it'll work, but I've done several things this way in restoring antique furniture and have had very good luck with the process. If it does work, and I think there is a very good chance it will, you've saved yourself a lot of work.

If it doesn't, you can always replace the bulkhead with 1/2 or 5/8" ash plywood..
