Leaky window

When I owned my '66 Safari, I had two windows that leaked. I used Andy's method and the leaks stopped. Never came back in 10 years of owning the Airstream. Be sure to follow his instructions and replace the gaskets as well.

I have drip caps in the garage and plan to install them on my 66. I think every Airstream trailer had drip caps except the 66 to 68 years. Drip caps help keep the "water pressure" of the hinge joints which reduces leaks. Here is a photo of a 68 Globetrotter with a drip cap over the front window. It appears to be a homemade one. I like the VTS caps better. I saw the trailer in a park.

I used the air pressure method for finding the exact point of leakage around the windows as well as other places. It is pretty effective in my view. I taped up a floor dry fan to my storage compartment and let it blow. I had to seal the fridge vent and stove vent. It was a worthwhile afternoon.

Aluminuminum has an excellent thread in the Safari section about how these Corning windows were designed and changed over the three years, with the 68s being the best. He discusses where they leak at the hinge and how to seal them. Use the search feature.

thanks. I have a drip rail over the front window and expect to do all the remaining ones. With a bit of extra sealant, the kitchen window now has not leaked over the past few rainy months. Makes me happy.

We had a pretty bad leak over that front window, too. Resealed it. Didn't help. Removed and resealed the window cover. Didn't help.

Resealed along the curved panels along the front roof. Stopped it dead.

Remove any old, loose sealant with a sharpened popsicle stick. Start from the uppermost seam and work downwards. Tape along either side of the length of each seam. Apply Vulkem. Finger smooth. Remove tape. Repeat at next lower seam.

Replace the gaskets, PROPERLY, with the newer style, much better sealing job, with the hollow "D" shaped gasket.

If done correctly, that will destroy the ability to leak.

You might try Capt.Tolley's on the narrow gap seams. Several applications may be needed, but it is quick & easy.
