Replacement vented window? DIY or Professional?

So, we bought or first airstream, Success! It was delivered! Success! It is missing a side window.... wtf?

The vented 30" vista window (frameless side window) above the lounge in our 2016 international 25fb has been completely busted out : (

My local dealer wont be able to fix it for at least 4 weeks...

How would you seal up the window water tight until I can fix it? I have some packing tape and trash bags but I think Ill need something more substantial... i really dont want water damage inside the trailer : 0

Try cutting a cardboard box a bit larger than the window size and put it on the outside. The cardboard will help the waterproof plastic/tape cover from being over worked by the weather.

If this was a factory delivery of a new AS I'd be incandescently livid over 'four weeks' delay - have you talked to any other dealers, or inquired direct to Airstream HQ in Jackson Center, OH?

Not to digress from your original question but IMHO, that is almost DOA (well not that bad) but still, you shouldn't have accepted the delivery? Anyhoo, I'm still fairly new and if I was in your shoe, I'd seriously find at least a covered spot or a garage for my piece of mind. Sorry to hear about the mishap

Automotive type tempered safety glass just explodes into a zillion pieces if you nick the surface right. A rock with a pointy spot bouncing off the window can make it disappear like magic. I can't believe that a dealer can't get a window in 2 working days if not overnight and it should take way less than an hour to install a window like that. I'd call a few dealers and see if this can't be done sooner, but it looks like you've got the hole covered so maybe not a problem. One thing that makes the USA great is that anybody with a credit card and a telephone can make stuff appear at the door the next day, or very soon after that, usually! The most important King in the world couldn't do that just 100 years ago! Or pull up to a ocean beach and take a hot shower after a cold beer!

As said four weeks I'm guessing that could be shrunk to one or less if handled correctly. The idea of using cardboard covered with plastic is a good way to go. I'd secure it all the way around with either 3M blue painters tape or the Green Painters tape to protect your finish. DO NOT USE duct tape or gorilla tape.

One other suggestion for tape is "gaffer tape". You can find this at a Guitar Center store or online. It doesn't harm the finish underneath and holds better than the masking tapes will of wind is in the picture.

...And only let the tape attach to the window frame. If it does stick, you don't want it to damage the Clearcoat on the skin of the trailer

DIY - you can do it!

I had a similar window break. For a temporary solution (day that it broke) I went to Home Depot and bought some lexan plexiglass. Got it home, cut to size using a jigsaw, drilled a couple holes for the mounts and used existing hardware to install.

Then I called colonial airstream parts department and they shipped me a new factory window (glass only). When it arrived I just swapped out the hardware again.

Super easy fix. I'd definitely recommend solid lexan vs bags / tape / plastic wrap. That stuff won't last in the wind rolling down the highway if you plan on traveling any.

Btw I got the new glass in less than a week and it took 30 minutes to install.......
