Door Hinge Pin loose

The upper hinge pin on the main entry door is constantly "creeping" up out of the hinge. How do I stop it from coming out and causing a big mess?

Is there any way to use safety wire to secure it?

Since my unit is on the line assembly 210 miles from here, I can't go look easily, but could one put a set screw in the housing to lock against that pin?

Peen the end of it with a center punch.

Thanks for the reply.

The hinge appears to have been peened around the pin. Should I peen the area that has already been peened or the pin itself?

I may have to try the set screw..I don't think that it can be wired..maybe short term to get it someplace where I can really work on it.

A set screw can work but you need to remove the pin and get a bottom tap and a set screw.

If you peen it you need to mash the aluminum into the steel pin. Works better when both materials are the same.

You might also be able to drill through hinge and pin and install a roll pin. It depends on how good of a machinist you are.

The last few years Airstream has installed a slotted pin and snap ring on all new trailers to hold the pin securely. These are direct replacements and available from Airstream for your trailer.

The ten cent solution is to drill a #30 hole horizontally into the top part of the hinge, through the mount, front to back, and tap a 1/8"x1/2" roll pin into the hole with a small hammer. It'll take a minute and a half, and will never work up and out of the hinge again. It is the ten cent solution because that is what a roll pin that size usually costs.

We had the same problem, tried Locktite and it didn't work. We ended up having the Airstream dealer replace the pin with the new version the last time we had it in for service. We kept having to beat it back in place every time we stopped. Hope the new pin stays in place.

My 2010 had that problem and the dealer fixed it with a BFH and a center punch. It hasn't been a problem on the new one.

I replaced with a pin kit like Doug mentions in post #7 through AS dealer.

This is the solution that I used and it is working fine..though not for the faint of heart when you start drilling holes in places that do not have holes. The material is much harder than I expected, but a new drill bit took care of that. The roll pin fit is very snug and the hinge pin is now secured.

Thanks all for the input and the expertise.
