Awning Roller

We are new Airstream owners and are preparing it for a long trip. In Rich Luhr's Newbie Book he recommends having a roller on the door to protect the awning. With rounded door corners and a gutter just above the door how does one mount such a roller? Help please in Florida. We are heading to BC Canada in less then a week.

I'd call Zip Dee or Airstream but it looks like you use rivets or screws to mount it. We don't have one and if the awning is all the way up you won't need it. I read on here somewhere that Airstream must have a ton of these because they come with every awning they ship. I'm not sure you really need it.

I balked when zip-dee started to put roller on my AS but let them go ahead with installation was best thing I did when they showed me that top of door would rub on awning even if was up all way. Roller goes on front of door handle side, pop rivets on or olympic if you have them, but any rv repair shop or dealer should be able to install, as some other trailers use them to. if pop rivet on make sure to seal them.

Follow up olympic rivets will not work as cannot get shaver on head. To install top of roller bracket goes up to trim at top of door then slightly past strait top of door into curve on handle side, if installed on strait part of top of door will be to high. PS a ounce of prevention better than cure, so why take chance of tearing or rubbing on awning with out roller, also if 1 corner is dropped in rain door will rub. Should not take ten min. to install.

Go without the roller and see if you need it. It looks kind of klunky installed, and I opted not to do it. With my awning fully up on the door side and down one notch on the other end for rain drainage, the door never rubs the awning. When I put the awning in "caravan" position, short extension, the door rubs the awning a little, just be gentle when you open the door. Six years of use on our old 2007 showed no awning wear without the roller.
