Bob, I think it will certainly help. I think an RV water pressure regulator at the spigot controls pressure only while there is water flowing through it. After that the campground back flow prevention device locks the water in your hose and the pressure throughout your hose and Airstream water system equalizes right to the faucets.

Then if there is thermal expansion in system due to heating of the hose in the sun and heating in the water heater, and there will be, it is up to the elusive air "bubble" in the water heater to take up that expansion. Or relief by the water heater thermal/pressure relief valve.

If these fail to protect your system and hose from thermal expansion, a water pressure accumulator can provide expansion space.

I am thinking of going with a 2 filter setup with a 55 psi external regulator for the campsite water source. Any problems with that approach with respect to flow, etc?

We always use an external water pressure regulator at the hose bib, and make sure we turn off the hose bib when we leave the site.

Nope, I run an adjustable Watts regulator at the bib, through a water softener and filter...all at 60psi and everything is fine with flow and pressure at the AS fixtures.

I have been using one of those non-adjustable ones and have not been very happy with how low the water pressure is. I just bought this one (http://www.amazon.com/Pressure-Regul...ater+regulator). What a difference! We now have good pressure inside again. I did some testing and found that a pressure setting of 60 psi is good and if you turn on the water pump at this setting, it will still run a short time. If I am understanding this, does that mean the water pressure using just the water pump is about 65psi.

That's a reasonable assumption, but if you look up the specs for your particular brand and model of pump, they usually tell you XX gallons of flow, at XX PSI.

We see the larger regulators with a gauge included. Are the union style regulators of such poor quality that one of these upgraded regulators is a good idea? Appreciate any technical input, including life span. Thanks. Pat

The cheap brass fixed regulators don't allow as much flow as the ones with a gage on them. I had one, and it didn't flow enough volume for the tankless water heater to work right at a campground with somewhat low water pressure. Tossed the darn thing, got the better regulator and have no more issues. I put the regulator at the campground spigot, run the white hose to the AS, add a filter and 90 degree elbow at the connection. Works great.

Is the built in regulator adjustable?

Nope. It's preset and not adjustable.

Built in regulator defective. Can they be repaired or need to replace. Can not get adequate pressure through mine. Just a very small stream as each fixture.

It is not a regulator on the airstream and if it leaks, the water will not show up at the little hole on the outside. It will leak on the inside. It is trash. Take it apart and trace the hole. It is blocked. It will not regulate.

Several things here. First, the valve is not a regulator, it is a limiting valve. It does not regulate. It is like a pop off valve and it does not drain out the little weep hole on the outside. It may default at a certain pres. they mostly just leak on the inside.
The drain hole is also blocked, inside.
