You will probably need an adaptor from Thetford to Valterra. This will allow you to connect the standard fittings, valves, hoses, whatever. Should be available on Ebay, local RV supply, Amazon.

That's right around the time that they switched to Thetford connections. What you're calling "modern style" is Valterra. You can get Thetford to Valterra adapters online or in many RV supply stores.
A photo would help since there were some older setups for which matching connectors are no longer available.

When I had the sewer discharge valves rebuilt I had a Valterra fitting put on instead of the Thetford. Now I can get hoses and fittings just about anywhere. Yes we have a vintage trailer, but I do not want to be stuck out somewhere with full tanks and broken fittings and nowhere close to get new ones.
My trailer apparently has an old style fitting which is not compatible with anything but it did come with an aluminum elbow that attaches to the waste fitting and I was able to fit a modern Valterra hose over the elbow after a bit of effort. Problem solved with no major outlay required :-)
