Mounting a new toilet?

I have a 68 sovereign. The toilet leaks water from the box on the side that the flush pedal comes out of. I believe it is the original one, and I have just about decided that a new one would save headaches down the road, but here is the problem:

All the new toilets I have seen mount with 2 bolts and mine has 4 bolts sticking out of the floor. Is that necessary to keep a seal with movement? Could I just grind 2 of them off? Is there a way to get at them from underneath? Should I just find a toilet that uses 4 bolts? What do I do?! Thanks in advance!

Shiloh, our 67 has a metal flange in the floor, and the bolts slip into it from the top: There should be no need to work from the bottom or to saw anything off -- unless they're just corroded together somehow. The bolts are generally made of brass.

Just a slight thing with ours. Last time I had the toilet off, I realized that part of the reason it was sooo hard to reinstall was the shortness of the bolts. So I located extra-long toilet bolts at the hardware store, and they certainly helped.

Oh, and be sure to use the rubber-style RV toilet gasket. It's flexible, allowing some down-the-road movement while maintaining the seal.

Knowing you had a water leak helps inthat eubanks corrosion is more than a blind guess, the two bolt ones have a slot for the head of the bolt, wouldn't take much to make them feel unmoveable. I was lucky as they were rust free and once loosened the nuts moved freely, no room to put a large wrench.

Thanks

So, just to clarify, if I remove the extra 2 bolts and install a toilet that only uses 2 bolts, (with a rubber rv gasket) it will be fine and not have any problems?

Should be fine. Ours has only two bolts, too. If that's the design of the commode, then it is what it is.

The new toilet will mount with just 2 bolts. I recently install an Aqua V and it has 1 bolt on each side. It would be best if you have a solid floor to mount the metal (or plastic) flange. There are key hole shaped slots that the toilet flange bolts slide in to. Most toilet will require the slots to be at 9 and 3 o'clock.
