Is there such thing as a silent water pump?

My water pump is fine, but like yours, it sounds obnoxious.

Anyone know a good pump that is near silent?

I think that most of the pumps are not bad in their noise level, but the mounting and the pipes connected to them are where the noise comes from. In addition, air in the pipes seems to be an issue in recent Airstreams.

You probably have a variable speed Sure Flow pump in you 2015 which is what I have in my 2014 FC 20'. Mine can be noisy as hell, or as quiet as a mouse with no way to tell why, although I believe now it has something to do with air in the lines. It most likely is not the mounting as that cannot vary from one day or trip to another.

In short, changing the pump may not solve the problem. I am still working on finding the issues with mine.

I have a 2015 Serenity and it came with a cheap FloJet pump that was noisy as hell. I too thought it was air in the lines because sometimes it seemed quiet. I worked and worked to quiet the pump and the hammering got worse. It got to the point where I know that there wasn't any air in the lines and the pump still hammered. It was just a a lousy pump.

I installed the ShurFlo 4048 bypass pump along with a little insulation and now it is very smooth and quiet. In addition it is a 4GPM pump so my flow to the shower and front sink is much better. There is still audible noise when the pump is on but it is more like a purr than a jack hammer.

Thanks RVDreamer

Do you thing there is any concern with over pressurization with a higher GPM pump? I believe the Airstream has a built in pressure regulator but the pump would be after it.

Crud in your filter

Any pump will get noisier if the filter gets fouled. I just had to shock my white water tank because of an Algae problem. In addition I circulated the bleach solution through AND even replaced the white water hose (poured the bleach solution THRU the new hose and into the water fill to get that cleared out too!

Living in a coastal swamp... oh well. One thing I though about was that I installed an inline filter in the old hose, but put it in next to the spigot. The inline filter will remove any small amount of chlorine put in the city water - and then the rest of the 25 foot long hose lay on the ground in direct sunlight. The inside of the hose was green from some kind of algae as a result.

My in-line filter was spotless. I always filter my water before putting it in my trailer and we have very clean water in the mountains of Colorado. In my case the noise was just the pump. I think the FloJet that came with the 2015 trailer was just a cheap one-speed pump with no bypass. This caused it to hammer and cycle a lot, especially when using the toilet flush.

The new ShurFLow 4048 pump is a bypass pump and is adjustable so that when you use the water at a slower rate (say from the bathroom sink), the excess water is bypassed back to the inlet of the pump. This allows the pump to run smoother and not cycle on & off. I also think it just does a better job drawing water from the tank than the old pump which stops the hammering.

I wouldn't want a quiet pump

The sound is useful to me. I know when the pump comes on when it shouldn't, that I have a leak. I know when I am running out of fresh water, and I know when I ran out of fresh water.

The only drawback is if someone uses the toilet in the middle of the night. I get around that by turning the pump off when I go to sleep.

Did you go for the 4008 or 4048 pump perhaps?

SHURFLO® REVOLUTION™ Pump 12 VDC 3.0 GPM | REVOLUTION™ 4008 Pumps

SHURFLO® 4048 High Flow Pump | SHURFLO® 4048 High Flow Pump

Are you happy with the pressure and water flow?

I have a Flying Cloud 20' with smaller tanks, so minimizing flow is important.

Thanks

You may be interested in the the new pump discussions in the FC20 thread.

Thanks for any ideas you have, including whether the Shurflo 4008/4048 pumps are quieter than your "Shurflo 4900 0201 variable speed," which the company claims to be the case as I read their specs.
