Help: Waste Valve handles broke!

They are old and brittle...the second one broke today...I was going to twist it off and head to my friendly area RV store and buy a twist on replacement...until I found that it does not twist! I've got an 85 Limited... Where the heck do you find these handles and most importantly how the heck do you put the new ones on? There is a pin that runs through the rod that fits in the hole you see on the side. Is this pin suppose to come out...on mine it does not or is unwilling to budge...thanks for your help in advance!

Lots of views, no suggestions...hmmm.. Well I'm going to try a fix.. Since I can't afford to replace the entire unit times two. Bought new metal handles that screw on and since mine you can't screw on new handles...I will drill the threads out of the handles, slide the new handle onto the rod and try to cross drill it then fit a cotter pin through it to hold it... here goes...

Is the rod hollow or solid? You could get a thread cutter and thread the rod, screw on and Loctite it??????

Most people simply replace the slide assembly. My material costs were around $30 for two replacement slides and aftermarket stainless steel bolts.

Give pic of the valve rod.

I will replace mine with aluminum bar stock when they fail.

Done... Sorry for the blurry picture... Just drilled out the old roll pin and cross drilled new handles...cut down handle to fit AS and slipped Cotter pins through the holes to hold...it work just fine. Thought about cutting threads into the rods, but the steel is very hard and there's no real smart way to hold onto rod without damaging it. Can't afford to replace entire assembly and no way was I cutting holes in my camper to access... I'm pleased with the outcome.
