External Water Filter Carrier - Housing

Have any of you fabricated or purchased a carrier/housing for external water filters that you really like?

If so, please share your setup and ideas.

Saw one this past weekend made from a plastic step stool. It was a single canister and they simply cut a hole in the top of the stool that the canister dropped right into. Wish I had snapped a picture of it.

I just have a heavy wire hooked to each side of the inlet/outlet and I hang it on the spigot or post, one less thing to store and carry around. I found these ideas.

I like the looks of the two pictured and they look "made by owner" which is even better.

When I bought my two canister system from RV filters they suggested a large plastic tote with a lid. Cut two holes for the in/out hose and keep it under the trailer when in use out of the sun. The idea was to keep things from growing int he canisters.

I did not have time before my recent trip to Canada to put the holes in the tote and wound up storing my water hose in the tote with the filters. Everything was a "little" to tall for the lid to stay on without a bungee cord during travel, but what I was able to do was use the bungee to hold the lid on with the in/out hoses coming out under the lid which I held on with the travel bungee. It is now stored for travel in the bed of the truck and I no longer need to worry about a wet hose in the storage compartment on the trailer.

I'm new at water filtration and would like to pick the brains of those more experienced. I used the 2-filter external system for the first time, but do not expect to make use of it again for some time, as clean water will be readily available on our remaining trips this year.

My question relates to how best to store the filters when not in use? Should I drain and dry them or simply allow them to remain filled?

I have a single GE water filter on ours. When we move I just disconnect and drain both sides, then I close the valve on the outlet side.

I don't understand the need for 2 filters. Wherever we go I see either a GE like mine or a filter that looks like a pill, blue or white. We have clean drinking water in all of the campgrounds and state parks in the US. If it wasn't, I wouldn't be putting it into my AS lines or water tank (or me).

Depends on what kind of filters they are, but absent manufacturer's instructions to the contrary, sanitize them with bleach, remove water, and store open and dry when you're not using them.

If you're on an extended trip and using it periodically, store wet and flush before each use. Re-sanitize and flush after sitting for a while, or if you ever suspect a questionable water supply. Trash filters and clean/sanitize the housing if sliminess or odor develops.

As a side note, never take the first draw from a fixture. The worst bacteria and metal contamination are in the first few seconds. Run the water til it's cold, then use.
