Composting toilet?
We are redoing our 1954 cruiser and are trying to decide on installing a black tank or just go with a composting toilet. Any suggestions?

I think I would go with a quality composting unit.

I've been doing a lot of research on this, and I really like the sound of composting toilets. Do some searches on the forum, and be sure to go watch the YouTube videos by GoneWithTheWynns about their composting toilet. It really sounds like a much better way to go.

I have done several messages regarding the benefits of a composting toilet. If you would like o PM me I would be glad to discuss it with you.

Ours, also a Nature's Head, will be installed this coming fall when we're going into winter storage.
We will be combining our tanks into one large grey tank.

From what I've been reading and learning, capacity is several weeks of use by two adults, up to two months. Now, keep in mind that the way the NH toilet works is by separating the solids from the liquids. You will need to dispose of urine every three to four days, but that's easily done.
Jason and Nikki Wynn from gonewiththewynns.com have an excellent YouTube channel where they review the Nature's Head in some detail: https://www.youtube.com/user/gonewiththewynns
Worth watching, even though they're not Airstreamers

How well do these work if a person has an extended bout of loose bowels?
I just don't think that there can be enough sawdust.

Doesn't everyone have a spare bag of cat litter in their trailer?

The tiny house movement has embraced the composting toilet. Check out some of their blogs and web sites for a lot of good information and reviews.
Before asking me for links, Google is your friend.

Natures Head
We installed a Natures Head composting toilet in our '58 Caravanner, and we love it. We decided to remove the black water system in the camper because in our case it was ancient and non functioning. We have the toilet installed and used for nearly a year now. The only thing I can recommend is to use a toilet deodorizer for the urine bottle, and also keep a spray bottle of vinegar available for washing down the extras. We bought a 50 pound bag of sphagnum moss and that was last year and we are still using it. they are economical, easy to use, and I highly recommend it.

After much research I decided to go with the Airhead Composting head on my sailboat. The Airhead is slightly more expensive that the Natures head but, it requires less space for the installation and to me there are several design advantages such as the placement of the pressure fan. MKost of the sailors that I know prefer the Airhead. The Airhead has to be ordered from the manufacturer who is very helpful. Reminds me a lot of Sean with Pro Pride.

we have settled for an airhead also. the natures head was too large for our 23' flying cloud with corner bed. it is still going to be a challenge to install but we are getting all input we can since the black tank will be a problem. glad to hear you are happy with it. surprised more people haven chosen it.
thanks,
delfina

This is the second time I've read about Air Head. I need to look into this! I was settled on Nature's Head - thanks to the Wynns. But I need to research this further.
Are there other brands I should look at as well??

toilet paper goes in right after you are through. as far as other brands, we research a few and all were larger and didn't rate as well as the airhead. but research, you need to know for yourself this is the right one.
