Black and Grey Tank Valves Hard to Pull

Hi there...
Just got our '86 Sovereign 25' and it is up at Jackson Center getting serviced. I had a concern with the black and grey tank valve that I reported to the technician. It is very hard pulling on the valve to let the water drain from the black and grey tanks and I was worried I would bust it.
The estimate to fix it is with a "all plastic slide-EZvalve repair kit". The cost for the kit is $51.34. That would be okay but the problem is the AS service center estimates that it would take 5 hours to "rebuild both great and black tank valves" at $100+ an hour. Has anyone ever fixed this problem. What needs to be done and how hard is it to do? Any advice would be helpful before we advise the factory on whether to move on this. Thanks.

The hardest part of servicing (or replacing) the dump valves is usually getting to them. Some AS models have the valves exposed so replacement is usually straightforward. Other models have their dump valves buried behind some metal panels. If you have the latter (and I suspect you do since you are asking this question) take a look at this area to see if you feel comfortable opening up the metal panels to access the valves so you can replace them yourself. Some people will just cut an opening or two in the panel to get at the valves and then rivet a new access panel over the hole(s) they made. It might be easy enough to drop the entire panel and keep it intact so you can just rivet it back in place when you've replaced the valves.
