I have a fifth wheel.

Hi, When told that I could have had a fifth wheel with that amount of money, I can tell them that my trailer came with a fifth wheel; It's located under the front of the body, just behind my battery box / propane tanks.

The biggest question that comes up for me is "How can you afford to pull that thing with that big truck of yours?"

I answer with:

Well, at Christmas we set off and spent twelve nights, drove 2100 miles and stayed at seven campgrounds. We camped on the gulf coast, the Atlantic coast, the Georgia low country, and even in between. We watched the sun rise out of the atlantic from our campsite and we explored a four-hundred year old fort in St Augustine. We toured three state capitols, hiked miles of trails, saw what made Coca Cola a worldwide phenomenon and slept in our own beds at night. We ate fresh seafood, the kids swam in the ocean (new years day) and we even cooked steaks, chicken and ribs on our grill. Everything, all of it, groceries, fuel, campground fees, even souvenirs and museum tickets, basically from when the tires left the driveway until the camper was parked back in it cost lest than $150/day.

Try doing that driving a Honda and staying in hotels while eating restaurant food every day for almost two weeks with the wife, two kids and don't forget the dog.

Money well spent.

I used to be employed in the legal field and worked for many ambulance chasers.

I also worked for the coroner. It was something right out of the Adams' Family. We shared our space with the morgue - in the cramped dungeon of the local hospital.

The coroner was a real ghoul. Hunched over, bushy, dark eyebrows, running around in a white lab coat. At one time we kept our lunch in the same fridge as the specimens, tissue samples and slides etc. So much for cross contamination. (They have since moved).

I am not a medical professional; just have been privy to the lingo and have read too many autopsy reports.

Then I explain that the cost of something is the difference between what you pay for it and what you eventually sell it for. When you think of it this way, airstreams don't cost that much.
I like this answer the best. Since I own a vintage unit, it did not cost a lot and people never seem to get hung up on the cost.

I will always be able to sell my 66 Tradewind for the purchase price plus all the improvement costs to it, so in the end my Airstream will be free! However, even if they are not free or cost a lot, they are worth it to most owners.

No SOB or 5th wheels for me. I like camping and traveling in Airstreams, regardless of the cost.

Dan

Cost should only involve two people on need to know basis- my spouse and the IRS. If price is important to them and I respect our relationship, I ask them to "guess the cost", and whatever they say,is usually what they can handle so I tell them they are a good guesser.
