I bought a GPS at Costco in Fresno, CA and the first things that came out of the box was a warning about sticking it on the windshield. I did not have space to mount it anywhere else, so I took it back. Looking for a handheld GPS now. One of us drives that other works all the toys.

Jim-

This may be of interest to you because of its size and easy of use and you don't need to stick it to the windshield.

Portable GPS navigator is only the size of a deck of cards.

The Nüvi GPS Navigator is also a traveler’s reference and digital entertainment system, all in one. It provides detailed maps, automatic routing, turn-by turn voice directions and touchscreen control. Use it in your vehicle or as a handheld GPS—it’s small enough to fit in a pocket or purse. Navigate to an address or search points of interest—places like hotels, restaurants, shopping centers and tourist attractions. Nüvi automatically calculates the fastest route gives you voice-prompted turn-by-turn directions along the way.

Features:
Preloaded with City Navigator NT maps of the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico, with no downloading required
Unique “text-to-speech” feature calls out turns by street so drivers can keep their eyes on the road while navigating busy traffic or tricky roadways
Automatically recalculates the quickest way to get back on track if you miss a turn
Audible and visual navigation instructions and warnings
Choose 3-D map view or 2-D overhead view
Simplified PC connectivity (similar to digital camera) using USB Mass Storage with access to either the Secure Digital memory card slot or the 700 MB internal memory directly from your PC desktop
MP3 player
Audio book player from Audible.com
JPEG picture viewer
World travel clock with time zones
Currency and measurement converters
Calculator
Powerful built-in speaker

Use the Point-of-Interest (POI) Program Loader, available free from Garmin.com, to set up proximity alerts for school zones, safety cameras and more. The Nüvi features a 3 1/2" diagonal touchscreen display and comes with an AC charger, vehicle suction cup mount, carry case, 12/24-volt adapter cable, dashboard disk, USB interface cable and quick reference guide.

Sure looks like a window mount.

With Garmin (that is a Garmin) I believe you can get a little sandbag device that lets you mount it on the dash and avoid the window.

They also come with 3M tape and you can make a patch to mount it on the side of the dash with Velcro. The size of the unit is perfect for mounting it somewhere on the vertical portion of your dashboard.

This is the reason I opted for the built in stereo/LCD monitor "in the dash" vs. a top of the dash rearview monitor.
I see a lot of GPS systems poping up on dashboards and wonder how long it will take for the insurance industry to start reacting.
All this from the guy who has the laptop on a doghouse pedistal and is online all the time.
Actually, FL has the largest number of cars that seem to 'drive themselves' of any state in the nation. This is especially evident when you approach these vehicles (mostly Buicks , BTW) from the rear. It seems that no one is driving the car!!!

Upon closer investigation, the driver is using a periscope to see where they are headed as they can't physically see over the dash!!!!

The grey hair and white knuckle effect...With a pair of eyes peering from under the steering wheel...

Thanks Milo for reference to CLFA Vehicle Codes... Always thought there were laws like that, and good to get confirmation...

Too bad there are so few officers to enforce them, and so many people the statutes apply to... California joins the ranks of states where operating motor vehicle and talking on hand-held cell phone are illegal this summer.. They'd need 10,000 new police officers to enforce this, and I'm waiting for the Bumper Stickers to appear: "You'll have to pry my cell phone from my cold dead fingers.." I wish I felt law had a chance of being enforced or obeyed....
