Aaah California

You know those Handicapped and other parking tags we hang on our rearview? Illegal.

That law like many others is in the C.L.F.A. section of the code book.

Whats C.L.F.A.? California Law For A*%holes. I was told about this section by a Sheriff's Deputy. It's usually used on Citizens they have had previous "contact" with. I have seen this in action in court with things like four page fix-it tickets. Or my favorite the one where a Sheriff's deputy pulled over a guy who went around the corner on two wheels. The Deputy pulled him over even though it was end of shift because the Citizens who saw it were staring at him with Well what are you gonna do all over their faces. So he pulls him over. Walks up to the lifted Toyota truck and says. "Why don't you slow it down." He had not even asked for a license etc. Just wanted to be seen doing his job so he could go home. The response from the driver was two words. The second word was you.

So three pages of fix it's later he called a C.H.P. vehicle inspection officer. Six pages more later... Be polite to the officer. It can't hurt.

It is very rarely applied to folks who appear to be regular members of society.

Maybe they have changed the law, but

It used to be - and may still be - that you can obstruct the rear window as long as you have a rear view mirror on each side. Most modern cars do. This is the same principle that allows you to put a camper on the back of your truck, in essence blocking your rear window. This also allows you to tow the Airstream, which also blocks your rear view.
On the other hand, I don't want to apply too much common sense here...
Dave

Lol...true Dave. Sometimes common sense and basic logic don't apply.

If common sense is so common, how come so few people exhibit it?
In a state I was an inspection mechanic for, you could have small stickers (like AIR stickers) as long as they were not placed within the sweep of the windshield wipers. That area is generally considered to be the critical viewing area. Parking permits and inspection stickers are usually okay as long as they are outside the swept area.

So, will my dash mounted GPS present an issue?

IN CT as in may area states it is illegal to drive and use a cell phone. The law does allow hands-free but it appears people think holding it in your hand and using the cell on speaker makes it OK. We drive 1 hour to work each day and I am still amazed at the people on the phone stuck to their ears while going through red lights!

Yes but only in these two states at this time. As for the Handicap Tags that you hang from your rearview mirror, if you read the paperwork wich came with it, the tag is for Handicap Parking. It is to be displayed only when parking and removed for driving so as to not hinder safe vehicle operation. Which to me makes a lot of sense since the darn things are pretty big and I sure don't need something that large blocking my view while going 95 MPH down the breakdown lane during rush hour!

Now that is one law I can't wait to be nationwide. I thoroughly enjoy the cellphone convenience experience but witness many auto-related near-misses daily that I suspect to be cellphone related (due to the visual evidence seen of the driver with the phone plastered to one ear). My favorite the other day, was the cell phone and cigarette in one hand and the cup of coffee and hand on the wheel in the other hand. Yikes! What was the driver thinking!

Obstructed view is the problem. How can we be against a clear field of vision? Now if you can't see over the steering wheel, as is the number one problem in Florida, is the dash board obstructing your view?
This is the reason I opted for the built in stereo/LCD monitor "in the dash" vs. a top of the dash rearview monitor.
I see a lot of GPS systems poping up on dashboards and wonder how long it will take for the insurance industry to start reacting.
All this from the guy who has the laptop on a doghouse pedistal and is online all the time.

In my case, I am tall enough that I can see over the GPS. The GPS is only blocking the view of my hood. I guess it helps to drive a big truck!
