My reason is that..
.. When I gave it a shot, I found 2 guys just talking to each other. Newcomers were'nt recognized or welcomed. Lotsa folks popped in, and then after listening to the mine's bigger, older bit, left.
A chat room like this should leave openings for anyone who wishes to express themselves. A pause, and a "whatta yu think?" every so often makes people feel welcome.

The chat room is what it is. Folks come and go all the time. It's funny, I've been on chat several times where it's been packed and near empty. I've never had that perception.
You just have to jump in with both feet. There are no training wheels in chat like you'll find on the regular forum.

FWIW, The first few Chat sessions I went to I was more of an observer than a part of it. It took ma a few times to get the hang of it. Then a small pop up window came up and I was chatting with one person and tying to keep up th the rest. Man did my head spin!!! Then lastnight it was a small session and it was nice. It takes time to get use to how it works.

Ken,
I had planned on it...BUT: the new sigma software won't run on the cell modem, the KOA I am at has a modem line, but I usually have to fight for it. The nearest free WIFI is 6-8 miles down the road, past a perennial Police Road Block, and it is past my 2030 bedtime...I know, I know personal problems don't concern you

So whats your point? Just kidding of course - we/I did miss you.
Soarhead - yeah, you have to jump in - yes conversations do get going, but feel free to join in, give us your take on whatever we are talking about. Most of us try to say hello when someone signs on - I can't tell you how often someone will join in, we say hello, no response and within minutes they are signed off. One of the best ways to get things going is to say hello, identify yourself as a new user and offer to pass the beer (virtual beer of course) - that will get you lots of responses.
Log on as Soarhead next week, I'll make sure we get you going - again for others, let us know your new and we/I will make sure we bring you in to the conversation.

Most days I don't know what day it is. Last night was no exception. I made it albeit late. I was a bit daunted by my first chat experience. I think it was Jalina who greeted me and struck up a conversation. Try it again. We'll be looking for you.

give it another try next tuesday, we always try to recognize people when they log on. it can be daunting at first, we have had upwards of 20 people on at one time! it is like walking into a crowded room and trying to talk to everyone at once!

Just jump in, ask what we're discussing, and then ask away with questions. Like everyone says, we try to say hi, and sometimes the chats get flying...I wish it would go Tues and Thursday myself, as I find it hard to go a week without the chat. Also, say where your from as that helps up know where you're coming from.

I waited over a year to wade into Chat, and loved it. It is fast and sometimes a little intimidating. Sometimes by the time you jump in, the talk is off and gone in another direction, but that's okay! They'll either circle around again, or you head off with them in whatever direction talk is going. It is fun. . .and like others, Tuesdays seem far apart some weeks.

I thought that the chat room was almost always available - I have gone there during the week to have a real-time confab with some one with a question - several times. Has something changed?

i think "open it" is just a figure of speach.
i think it is available any time the server is running.

I was thinking along the same lines reading this thread - most other forums that have a chat room- it is not restricted to just one evening. You can plan ahead and chat with anyone - or just go in anytime and hope that someone else is in there - my problem is by the time I have time to chat it is 11:00 and everyone has gone to bed!
It can be a bit nuts in there - well at least it was last winter - and I must say some of the conversations must have this old boys secret lingo cause half the time the conversation is about nothing of consequence - jibber jabber. There are good ones too it is just a matter of timing it right

My concern with having other nights chat is it might fragment what we have. Last Tues was very quiet - if we go to Tues and Thurs it might be worse - on the other hand we may get some who can do Thurs but not Tuesday....... If we do both, I will try to do both
I know there have been some chats going on on Sunday morning with folks over the big river.

I've got spyware... and got it BAD! I have worked on my home machine since the second of Dec trying to get it removed, and it's really virulent. I've tried every adware, spyware, and trojan remover that is legitimate along with all of the stand-alone removal tools, and Killbox, HiJackThis, and every other tool known to modern man. I've only found one thread on the internet about a similar infection, and they solved it, but the tools they used won't kill mine! I've edited and re-edited the registry, killed files, killed processes, unregistered .dll files, done it all in Safe Mode, done it from the recovery console, you name it, I've tried it. This damn software is sooo bad, it actually renames it's files after some number of removal iterations! Unbelievable!
So, that's my excuse for not showing up. Spyware. So there. That's my story, and I'm stickin' to it!
Oh, and Soarhead, the closest thing I can compare chat with twenty or more participants to is what thinking must be like for an unmedicated schizophrenic. Dozens of seemingly unrelated and random thoughts zinging through cyberspace and ending up on your chat screen leaving you to make sense of who said what to whom in what stream-of-consciousness thread they're engaging in at the time.
And everyone's friendly. Always...
Somebody got a virtual beer? This damn spyware is giving me a headache! I need a break!
Roger
