What's up with the POTUS ad?

I thought all things political were verboten here on AirForums...Then I stop by tonight and see the POTUS's mug staring at me to click on an ad...???

Enough, already, I come here to get away from that crap...!

The question came up before, mexray, and apparently there is nothing that can be done to get rid of them, something about how the site is supported as I recall

I got rid of "obama" by disabling the Adobe flash plugin while on the forums.

I should have said my eighteen year old daughter got rid of it for me because I got tired of looking at his picture while enjoying the forums.

If this is the only forum you attend, you will be surprised to know the political campaigning (or anticampaigning as it were) is still going full tilt.
My ad blocking software is getting a real workout.

Ditto. The counter in the upper right corner of the screen is showing three ads blocked as I write this, but my AirForums page displays no ads at all that aren't Airstream-related, such as WBCCI and various rallies.

The ad is from Newsmax, a political magazine that leans in a certain direction. Their ads didn't only appear here, but on other sites I go to - they must buy a lot of Google/Yahoo ad space.

Drove me to install Adblocker on my Mac. All gone!

Odd. I've never seen a Newsmax ad on any site I go to, even when I'm browsing from my office computer at lunchtime, where I'm not allowed to install ad blockers. Must be one of those personalized ad thingies, where the ads you see are based on your browsing history.

many websites use google adsense, which is code that is embedded in the site and Google shows you ads according to what your search history is/was (targeted ads). If you searched for shoes or zappos.com, you will be shown shoe ads on any site that displays google ads. Because you may have done a google search or have a gmail account or use any google product, G knows what you are doing.

This is not airforums.com showing you these ads or supporting a certain party by chosing to display these ads.

for more on how to manage the ads google shows you go to http://www.google.com/ads/preferences/

From the google ad pref page;
Quote:
Google is a participating member of the Network Advertising Initiative and follows the industry privacy standards for online advertising. You can opt out of the DoubleClick cookie, as well as other companies' cookies used for interest-based ads, by visiting the aboutads.info choices page. If you want to permanently opt out of interest-based ads from all NAI member companies, try the Keep My Opt-Outs plugin.

Google may use your Google account information, such as items you +1'd on Google websites and across the web, to personalize content and ads on non-Google websites. If you'd like to control how you see +1 recommendations from people you know, and how your +1 recommendations are shown to others, please visit the +1 button settings page.

I'm pretty sure you're right. I subscribe online to a newspaper that has opposing views to Newsmax. The Newsmax ads were appearing both here and with my email service, probably from my cookies and history.

It would be very clever marketing to target someone who wants to "vote" strongly in one direction or another. Attracts clicks, which is the whole goal.

As an aside - it's so wrong that such a happy word - cookies - has an annoying alternative meaning in computer-speak.

I must be simple, I just don't look at the ads so I never really notice them.
