what's up with the advertising bar?

i've noticed recently the advertisement at the top of the portal page, forum page, etc. i remembered it being more static and airstream related. now it's annoyingly animated, flashing all kinds of color and advertising everything from best buy to vacations in st. lucia to addidas and the energizer bunny. it seems more of annoyance now. everytime i click on another page, another flashing annoying advertisement comes up. this has to be new, i would have noticed it before. has anyone else noticed this?

i get andy is the owner and this is a private forum, but i do find it annoying. i don't like it and prefer we not be subjected to it AND at the very least contributing members shouldn't be subjected to this kind of advertising since we've donated money to the site.

it makes me wonder if the real reason of this site is not so much to share airstream knowledge but to amass a lot of forum members to attract advertisers.

my vote is to take the banner down or at the very least, stop all of the annoying animation, although i know that won't happen. i won't be renewing my donation when it comes up for renewal.

David, I do believe the revenue from Google AdSense can be quite lucrative. I am retiring in a few days though about generating some income by setting up a couple of forums and seeing if I could generate some traffic. I looked into it a bit and though not easy it is doable. Andy runs several Forums so you can draw your own conclusions. I frequent several forums and many want it both ways AdSense revenue and forced membership fees, Andy lets you contribute as a matter of choice. I must say when I first became a supporting member the ads were much less invasive but I do not find them overly bothersome.

Airstream related ads don't bother me as much as the variety we now see. One of the reasons I became a supporting member was to help avoid seeing ads about everything under the sun. But ads are certainly more lucrative than supporting members are and the forum won't be around unless it's somewhat lucrative for someone.

It may be inadvertent, but it shows where the priorities are when the banner ads get frequently upgraded but supporting members wait months to get stickers.

Odd, the banners and advertising doesn't bother me in the least. It would take more than a few blinking lights to deter me from enjoying this community. The last ad I actually noticed was one that featured a with a bear with a nice hat and was all about preventing forest fires.

As long as the ads remain a top banner, they aren't that big a deal. I'm usually scrolled down in a thread, so the ads aren't even on the page most of the time. However, if they were to become a sidebar and always visible, that would be a much bigger negative.

MAybe the supporting members should not see the ads. Those who are using the site for free should.

If you don't like the ads, just click on them. . .

Seriously, I saw an ad for Sean's new hitch thingy and it was very interesting. A well done ad.

What does bother me are the links to keywords that are embedded within a post. Those seem to come and go.

It's oddly coincidental that some threads have been pulled for being too controversial, but several of the banner ads have been for religion.

Firefox and noscript will take care of that.

Unfortunately, the ads are inserted by Google, which is why some of them seem to have no place here.
If you don't like the religious ads, try browsing the threads about chat night. Yikes!

Yes, I know the ads are put there by Google. That's why I think it's so coincidental.

I noticed one this morning from Qwest. Oh, boy, my favorite company. They provide such wonderful Internet service to the valley with their T1 lines that poop out every time they get wet. Too bad they're a monopoly!
