Okay, maybe y'all will have to work at this one:

And it's late afternoon
on a hot Texas day.
somethin' strange is goin' on,
and we's all in the way.
Well there's fifty or sixty people
they're just sittin' on their cars,
and the old men left their dominos
and they come down from the bars.
Everybody's checkin', old Jack Kittrel checks his watch,
and us kids put our ears to the rails to hear 'em pop.

Here's a good one...

So leave, you miners, leave;
oh, leave, you miners leave.
Take my advice, kill off your lice,
or else go up in the mountains.
Oh, no, lots of dust,
I’m goin’ to the city to go on a bust

I'll take that Paula. It's actually a California traditional song chorus from the 1800's. Many people performed it in various ways, but it is indeed about going to "see the elephant". This is a colloquialism spawned during the Gold Rush to describe the intense curiosity over the discovery of gold in California.

"Oh, no, lots of dust,
I’m goin’ to the city to go on a bust"

Refers to finding gold and going to San Francisco to spend it all on liquor and women.

Your Turn!

"Now I know just how much I have lost.."

The Tennessee Waltz Tom Jones did an awesome version of this with the Chieftains (Long Black Veil, 1994), I think Frank Zappa helped with it too.

what's the original artist's name?

Redd Stewart wrote it, Pee Wee King composed/sang it.
