What your neighbors think...

Because at any one time there are two visible airstreams parked in our yard, and some have suspicions there is a third- we get some interesting comments from our neighbors. I thought it would be fun to here some other peoples' comments they have received. Here are a couple of the ones we have had...
1. The Amish in our area have asked us if we are recycling aluminum.
2. Do they still make those "things"?
3. What do you need more than one?
4. Do you really sleep in that thing?

My neighbor wanted to know why I would buy a trailer that looked like a beer can when I brought home the 31ft AS. Then came the why do you need two trailers. Then came would you like to sell me that little cream colored one. Of course I could never sell the Argosy to anyone who didn't appreciate the class and workmanship of the Airstream line. So I said he wasn't for sale.

With three in the yard (Caravel, Sovereign, and Overlander) and the Safari in pieces in the rented space, I decided that I had to get rid of one--the Overlander. When my back door neighbor (whose house is about 20' higher up the slope) heard this, she was upset. "Please don't move it--how will I see if the deer are in the garden?" She had been using it as a mirror to observe her yard from her kitchen window.

And yes, I have heard the "why do you need more than one" remark more than once. Sometimes from inside my own house...

I think just about everyone on our street has had a tour of our Safari at one time or another, and they all said it was cool (which was a relief, since we live in a covenant-heavy area and we weren't quite sure how they'd respond to an old Airstream in our driveway). When we brought home the Caravel and parked it in our neighbor's driveway (with his permission!) they all wanted to know if he was going to tow it with his Cadillac Allante (no!). Whenever they see us out working on an Airstream or one of our vehicles, they smile, shake their heads, and say something like, "Oh you kids!". We choose to interpret that positively.

It's hard to know what our neighbors think (or say) as they've mostly stopped talking to us. We're waiting for the letter from the home owners association....

Well, one neighbor bought my Silver Streak when my Airstream arrived and they are busy restoring it.

Mostly the comments we get are how towing anything else with the old wagon would be sacrilegious .

We do happen to live in an area where there are quite a few hot rodders of all ages so pretty much everyone is used to old cars and paraphernalia heading home to one of the garages to show up the following year shiny and okay to look at.

One neighbor was commenting on how the sun glinted off it in the morning right into their kitchen area and when they sit out on their deck to have morning coffee and I'd taken that as a negative but eventually she said it was fine. We are mostly hidden by trees out back so it's not really visible most of the spring/summer/fall.

- whenever I start to get bummed about my kid growing up "in the city" instead of a "subdivision" etc I think about our urban lack-of-covenants neighborhood and lifestyle.

- I really feel for you folks who can't keep your trailer stuffed in your tiny back yard like me...but then again I'm green with envy for you guys with the hvac'd 4K sq.ft. workshops with your TIG welders and overhead lifts!

- my neighbors (gawd bless'em) all think the trailer is way cool and a plus for the 'hood. I just KNOW they've started feeling skeptical, however, that it's gonna be a "it never leaves his backyard!" situation....until they hear the whine of my air-powered grinder and drill...ha! "he's at it again..."

We live in a neighborhood with a HOA and have to keep the AS in a storage facility. We are able to bring it home to work on it and it barely fits in our driveway. At first I think our neighbors were a bit concerned, but over time it has become a treat for them to come and see it and see the improvements we have made.

Michelle,

Sending positive thoughts your way.

My HOA does not allow RV's. However all my nieghbors are gearheads so it can sit out front for up to a week while I fiddle with it before the phone call comes.

My wife hates mine

Can you believe it.....my wife does not like the Caravel. She tells everyone its a "Port-a-potty." I'll show her....I am trying to get another Airstream....this time 3 feet longer. Wonder what she will call that one??

Michelle, missed you in Dallas. I had to go to Rio Grande Valley. You get this "stuff" taken care of and come by again....I have some plane rides set up for ya.
