Wow, what a cool trailer - there were manufacturers who made look alike Airstreams - that may be one of them - or someone very talanted made a copy. Would love to look at it - could be worth restoring just for its uniqueness.

As of 10/17/04 the bid is $56.77. You would think they could probably get more money for it at the scrap yard. The aluminum alone is worth more than that!

If it is what I think it is, it is a late 40's Curtis Wright. If so, it is in many ways an actual Airstream.

Wally Byram needed a plant to build his Airsteams after WWII, and Curtis had capacity, experience building monocoque aluminum structures, and experience building travel trailers going back to the 20's.

Wally and Curtis fell out fairly quickly, and he went out on his own. But Curtis continued to build from his design under their own name for some time.

Just like the older Airstreams, they were built on a pipe frame, so it is on a flatbed trailer for a reason. They are a bear to rebuild.

The tag mentioned in the above post is not from this trailer. It is in the link provided in the auction, but is from the Curtis Wright this seller has pictures of and not from this trailer.

I looked at the photos again... there's no tag on the side of this one, and it sure doesn't resemble anything built by Curtiss Wright, Silver Streak, or Airstream of the era. And, Ted, I think you're right... it looks like wood stringers rather than aluminum framing inside that ceiling. How interesting! There probably isn't much inside structurally any more.

I am glad to stand corrected. I thought it looked a bit "square shouldered" for Curtis Wright, but then what do I know.

Wood framing. Wow.
