FAN, that's a great read. Made me wish my journalism career had been 40 years earlier before the internet and corporate greed ruined the newspaper industry

There never is one book. I've spun through the following in the last 6 weeks. I can scarcely get through 5 pages before conking out at night but make up for it at 5:30 AM. I would recommend the first five wholeheartedly:

Empires of the Sea: The Siege of Malta, the Battle of Lepanto, and the Contest for the Center of the World by Roger Crowley

Castles of Steel by Robert K Massie (or why Churchill's WW I dud performance as First Sea Lord did not predict his later greatness)

In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror, and an American Family in Hitler's Berlin by Erik Larson

A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness

Shadow of Night
by Deborah Harkness (now suffering Deborah Harkness withdrawal until the third book of this trilogy comes out in a couple years)

Equal Rites
by Terry Pratchett (Discworld series -- supernatural weirdness not far off from the Hitchiker's Guide books. my first exposure to this author. clever & intelligent.)

current: Fevre Dream by George R.R. Martin. Vampires on Mississippi riverboats? A hundred pages in, I'm not at all sure that this is up to his Game of Thrones books. I'll get through it, but I dunno...

next up: Trinity by Leon Uris. And probably Terry Pratchett again.

I am re-reading a first addition copy of James Michener's Hawaii. Rediscovered this copy while cleaning out the garage. Found a picture taken in December 1959 with me, my mom and Jim Michener. He was an old family friend while I was growing up in Hawaii. Finding and re-reading this book has brought back loads of great memories.

Finishing a biography of Hank Williams and an academic dissection of the origins of Bluegrass music (2 separate books). I'll then be starting a re-read of 'David Copperfield' for our monthly book club.

Like me, but 3-5 for about forty. Of this past year are several standouts:

Postwar: A History of Europe Since 1945: Tony Judt

and

The Comanche Empire (The Lamar Series in Western History): Pekka Hamalainen

and

The Swerve: How the World Became Modern: Stephen Greenblatt

Bill Bryson's "The Lost Continent". A bit our of date but excellent for a non-native of the Lost Continent, especially when think of camping trips, past and present.

Just finished "Thank You Marco Polo". The book was written by McGregor Smith, who was the corporate-hired public relations guy on the Around the World Caravan.

Not bad, but seemed to kinda skim the surface.

Okay, I'm about to commit blasphemy but I hate the new JFK Rowling book (Casual Vacancy) after the first 100 pages I indeed have a vancant look in my eyes and it has the honor of being the first book in the last decade that I put down never to finish.

I usually read a few things at once:
Right now I am reading
The Newbies Guide To Airstreaming, even thought I'm not a newbie, but can't be too prepared.
and
Architectural Floor plans book of NYC apartment buildings.
and
