What are you doing in my driveway???
Our '64 Bambi II is parked prominently in our driveway...back to the street. We live on a fairly well traveled road with two antique shops across the street in a very touristy town. Yesterday while mowing, I heard a horn honking. I looked up after a few series of honks to see a white Honda sitting in my driveway, a woman out of the car pointing frantically, and a man still in the car. Once I realized nothing was on fire, I turned off the mower (much to my frustration as it is very hard to re-start) and asked if I could help her.
Well, apparently she had been looking for a small Airstream for some time and what did I have planned for mine? Was I keeping it? Was it for sale?
I told her just as kindly as I could that it was not for sale, that I had only had it for four months myself, that we have big plans for it...etc.
Is this common? For people to just drive into your driveway to look at your AS? Should I print a "TRAILER NOT FOR SALE" sign to put in the back window?

I had the same thing happen to us, they stayed in their truck and honked until we came out "Is that for sale?"
The nerve of people, scary too.

We have had this happen as well and others have reported the same. It's a great way to meet interesting folks....

I would suggest a high quality coupler lock on your trailer. Some people might not want to buy it....

Well, crap. My wife and I have stopped and talked to people about their 'streams or just checked one out we saw sitting a couple times.. it didn't occure to me that people might think we a couple stalkers or something... I have had a couple delivery drivers ask about ours, but it really can't be seen from the road..

There are rural parts of the United States where visitors are expected to remain in their car and honk the horn lest they be thought to be trespassers. It is a continuation and expansion of the tradition to "hello the house," when arriving on foot or horseback.
People unfamiliar with this practice are just as startled and taken aback as are those living in remote rural areas when complete strangers walk up to the door without announcing their presence.

I think it's a cultural thing, as Jammer suggested. I prefer just to wave and wish them well on their way.

That's interesting. I've never heard of that tradition, I don't think it's common out here. Though I had a friend who is a lifelong farmer who was horribly offended by the census man walking through their gate and coming up to the house to ring the bell. She said 'that might fly in the city, but he should know better than to do that out here'! I'm a transplanted city kid, so I didn't know that rule either.
Our trailer is barely visible from the road, so we've only had a couple times where folks drove up to ask if it was available. I don't mind, but after they leave it does make me want to check the locks

It happens to us ALL the time. This past Saturday we spent over and hour with a couple who used to own an Airstream and have seen ours and finally decided to stop and ask about them. We give tours and talk with people when they stop by- it happens mostly on the weekend- but sometimes if someone see me in the yard they will stop. We get a lot of motorcyclist too. I don't mind- because to be honest if I saw 5 Airstreams in someone's driveway I would stop to talk to them also. A couple of times someone has wanted to buy one- but if I hear hunting cabin, catering trailer, or anything else along those lines we quickly shoe them away! If they are particularly interested then Andy will take them in to the garage-mahal and show them the 1939 Clipper! Here is a shot of our house from the road- at any time 3-6 trailers are visible from the road!

Can't blame someone for thinking you might be selling one with that many

We have a Reese coupler lock on it. We bought it the night before we left the house for a 2 week vacation. Lynn wants to chain it to the barn now! But with the frame rot, I bet any would-be thieves wouldn't get 200 feet from the house before the coupler broke, but all the same...

throw me a bone ????????
I have had a salesman, a census taker, and two religeous crusaders
walk up to my house and try to get onto the porch by bribing my
dog with a cardboard like, sorry excuse for a dog biscuit. As my
pup doesn't speak English, he had no way of communicating to them
the indignity of the attempted bribe. What made them think that I would
want my canine family members to be given rat hair infested cardboard.
Notice:
If you even think that my dog wants you to get back in your vehicle...GET BACK IN YOUR VEHICLE.
If you want to bribe my dog, try skinless chicken, well cooked beef, or
boiled shrimp. NO SALT. Please allow me to test all foods for freshness, and make sure that they are cooled in a refridgerator to a safe temperature

And what about the BIG dog - what does it like to eat? Or should that be who?

We used to have people stop all the time and honk from the driveway but that was when we had the St Bernard. Now that he is gone they come right up to the door and sometimes around to the back yard...makes me wish for another St Bernard sometimes...

If you don't have an Imperial Guard Dog.....
The simple solution to keep people from disturbing your peace, by asking
if your trailer is for sale....is to put a for sale sign on the trailer.

My DW went up a house where we had seen an Airstream and asked is it for sale and they said sure they hadn't used it in 2 years. We bought it on the spot.

This is a great idea! While our trailer isn't for sale - it could be for the right price. Great solution!

We live on a busy road, kinda rural, with a side street next too us that goes to an industrial area. Our trailer is only 75 feet off the main road and 30 feet off the side street,so its on a corner and we get that all the time. IS IT FOR SALE??? and I say SURE Got 20GRAND.ITS and antique ya know!
That usually ends the conversation.
We also have couple locks and pin locks.

I had a guy stop in the street the day before yesterday. I was outside puttering on the AS. I asked him if I could help him (thought he was lost or something). "I just had to stop to admire the beautiful trailer. I hope I didn't offend you," he said. I told him of course he didn't offend me. That's why it looks like it does....to be a thing of beauty. And if someone wants to buy it, like the others said, it would have to be a BIG buck!
