We registered our AS with the DMV today...finally, the second visit. Took an hour and a half because the DMV people hadn't dealt with this kind of thing...ever, apparently. But I stopped complaining when the lady told me the reg. fees would be $109.00 and good for FIVE YEARS!!

We got our plates and we're real!

But how do you only pay $109 for 5 years? I'm in California and I have to pay $50/year!

Also, what does the PTI mean? Where are your registration tags?

This is a wild guess on my part..
The personal Tags in CA are issued in sequential order, according to the tag style..She got Personal Tag 1, as it's the first one in order of style..

I think he's right, because at the DMV the poor gal was running all around with a big fat manual asking other people to help her try to figure out what to classify the license plate as. Her supervisor didn't know either. They had originally charged me more, I had a check all written out for $143.00, but the computer wouldn't cooperate so they left it alone and charged me $109, which is what the computer said. But they did say that PTI tag was the only one I'd need, and that they'd be sending me the new title.

I may still have to pay a yearly fee or something, like you, because most of what she was trying to explain to me as far as the long term sounded like "vjaepfnzgkjoweajfrdz". But when she said "now you just take this to window 8 and she has your receipt all printed up" I nodded my head OK and thanked her.

Now we can get to work!

I knew there was a reason why we moved to New Mexico: We paid somewhere in the 100s for our rig's plates, and they don't need to be renewed ever again: They're permanent.

When I went for my plates, they said that I couldn't have personalized plates in MO.... Does anyone else know if this is true???

The PTI is a Permanent Trailer Identification tag. Something California does. They charge a nominal registration fee every 2 years and you don't have to put a new tag on. Saves the State and the citizen a few dollars.

Very Cool plates and a cool price for em. Gosh, we pay over three hundred a year. Kinda think we made a wrong turn somewhere. Maybe it's time to leave California?

You'd think though, since CA's budget situation is so awful, that they would have done away with it and gone ahead and soaked trailer owners for reg fees to make up for what this is supposedly saving them? Not that I want them to, but we're getting charged more and served less in every other state department.

The cool price is only for registration, I had to pay $41.00 for the plates and in addition to the purchase price, a $25 fee every year for them.

I'm not sure what plates will be in Iowa, but we found the registration for our 65TW from 1997 and it was $27.50, so I'm thinking we might even get off a bit cheaper then CA! But I do like the fancy plates... we may have come up with something fun... still waiting for the title on ours before we got too far. The main office flooded the weekend before we went and got the trailer, so paperwork was a bit damp and disorganized..... Anyway - looking good! MGB

I asked once, many years ago when I still had my 1st Airstream, how they determined the fee. The lady replied that it had less to do with the age of the trailer than the square footage, but she didn't know the formula. Apparently, both age and square footage figure into the figure here in Iowa.

Yep, Mark's right! It's mostly calculated on square footage. My '87 Burro 17' was $19. Our '94 34' is about $60 (roughly).
