Exclamation Watch for scam in classifieds

Just answered an inquiry to our ad in the classifieds. Seemed like a logical request for more information. Got another email this morning saying that he like what he heard and wanted to buy our "item" as a surprise for his father. He said that he was a "marine engineer" and was out on the sea and didn't have access to his bank account. He proceeded to tell us to set up a Pay Pal account and give him the number. He then said that he would send his "agent" to pick up the "item" to be delivered to his dad.

This whole thing sounded fishy and the way that the sentences were put together just didn't jive with normal English, especially since he kept saying the "item" all the way through the last email. Another tip - the first email said his name was Bruner William , the next email said Brian Williams.

Please be on the lookout for these guys!!!

I always figure "if it's to good to be true, it is" And it's up front person to person and cash baby!!!!!!!! Or gold, I'll take gold. It's legal tender in Utah.

Also applies to online sites like Kijiji. I recently replied to a post for a 2010 International 25' selling for $13000. Sounded too good to be true, but decided to check it out. I rcv'd a response asking for a money draft to be sent through eBay; even got an eBay web site link. When I went to the link it became obvious this was not a legitimate eBay site, so I went to the legit eBay site and checked their security area. They had a note about scammers srequesting money transfers; but emphatically stated eBay does not handle payment in that fashion and this was most likely a sam.

So, just keep your eyes and ears open; and if it seems to good to be true it probably is.

Craig, it's buyer beware wherever one lists an item for sale these days. Communication between seller & prospective buyers takes place completely off this site. Therefore it is incumbent on a seller to use their best judgement. Cash and in-person transactions are what I'd be most comfortable with!

Had a simlar experience trying to sell a car, only it was supposedly a lady marine biologist buying the car for her son. Same red flags with bad grammar and wanting to use paypal.

I told her the car was parked at the Denny's restaurant with the keys in the igintion and to just come and take it for free. No response after that.

I think you'll know a serious buyer when you get one. They will be the ones asking how good the plasticoat finish looks, are there any serious dents, and if the axles are original.

Red face Glad I'm not the only one....

It's good to know that my "spidey" senses were on guard today. But it also sad that so many people have had the same experience.

We too thought the forums classifieds were safer than ebay or craigslist, but I guess the criminals are lurking everywhere.

When I answered this guy this morning I told him to "get a real job"!

Hi from Ga. . .ah, it was the alleged purchaser who was the scammer, not the classified ad from our forum. I should have known that ! thanks, Bob. I'm awake now regards, Craig

Tell "Amanda" you'll meet him at the container and give him cash when you can see the trailer and verify the serial numbers. I guarantee you will never hear from "Amanda" again.

Amanda was going to contact me through Google Wallet; I was to supply them with my full name, address and phone number. I would than be told how to pay and the transaction would be insured.

You have the oddest sense of humor! No one on AirForums could possibly be so obtuse as to do an identity thief's job for them by giving away your personal information willingly to a fictitious seller!
