Visiting the dark side: Looking at SOBs

Okay, first off, I haven't gone crazy (no moreso than usual, at any rate.) I'm not about to give up my Argosy.

My sister is looking at full-timing. My brother-in-law works in the oil and gas services industry, and they're looking at a LONG project (2+ years) far from where they've been living. My sister is tired of being apart for a week or more at a time, their kids are out on their own and they live in a rental so most of the big downside issues are not a problem.

They want bigger and newer than an Airstream they can afford (they want to pay cash, they'd be happiest with $10k-ish.) They'd like more than 30' long with slide(s), and prefer a bumper-pull because they don't want to jump into the 5th wheel thing right off (they have a capable F150 now and don't want to buy another truck at the same time they're buying a trailer AND relocating.)

Let's not get into aesthetic judgments here, I think they're butt-ugly inside and out, I'm looking for technical input.

What does our Airstream hive mind know about various brands of SOBs? I have heard good things about Arctic Fox, and I've found one a bit above their budget, but it's fairly new and might be worth the financial stretch. It's not all that close to me so I haven't gone to inspect it yet, but I'm likely to be the inspector for most of the ones she considers.

Specifically, I'm looking for known problems, known-good brands/models, known-bad brands/models, and if anyone knows of a cream puff for sale cheap in north TX or east TX I'd love to know about that too.

It's the off-topic section of AIR forums, I know that we have lots of members with lots of experience with lots of other brands. If you think there's a problem with that call a moderator.

I suggest you PM Lewster. I would think he would be more up on SOB's than anyone.

Thanks, that's useful. Following in that line of thought I invited someone else with multi-brand professional experience to comment as well as Lewster.

To use the framework of your analogy and apply it to what I actually did, I asked a Ford guy if he couldn't have a Ford and had to choose between Chevrolet, Nissan, Toyota and Ram which would he choose?

I never said I'm not looking for the information other places, but I know a lot about this forum and some of its members and I know many of us have had other brands before/in addition to Airstreams. I popped off about the moderator because I was annoyed at your post which was content-free and unhelpful, and I assumed (since it was unclear) you were telling me it was improper to be asking the question here (in the Off-Topic forum.)

Nooooooooooooo

Don't do it!!! I've had 6 SOB's, from 2yrs old to 30, and they ALL had issues. Mostly ROT. Leaks, roof problems (rubber- what a joke) you name it. Anything STAPLED together with a flat roof and a wood frame is going to cause you problems. Add a slide and multiply that by 5. The only thing I would REMOTELY consider besides an Airstream is an Avion or possibly Holiday Rambler, both with aluminum frames. FWIW, I'm not sure that an f150 is going to be able to handle 30+ feet, even without slides. Good luck!

Heheh... yeah, I said pretty much the same thing. I'd rather be a bit crowded in the Airstream I can afford than have lots of creaky/leaky room. I found a 3-axle Avion that's at the top of her price range and older than she wants to consider, maybe I'll get her to look at it. I have an friend who's an Avion aficionado with a 3/4 ton Dodge who'd move it for her, then she can deal with the truck issue later. I'll tell her I'm not the only one whose first reaction was "Run away!"

My in-laws had a Wonderful experience their Holiday Rambler. If I had to buy an SOB, that is hat I would get. My friends love their forest river and have had it for six years of heavy use.

You may find lots of good info here - but remember that most gave up their SOBs for Airstreams That said, this is totally fine to post here at AIR.

You might also want to register and ask here as well: iRV2 - The Friendly RV Forum Community Lots of good info....

OK, there are a couple of positive comments for Holiday Rambler (which I assume applies or refers exclusively to their Aluma-Lite trailers.) There are a few of those in range to check on that hadn't really sorted out of the chaff of a search just on "travel trailer" so that's VERY useful, helps me reduce the candidate pool.

If I couldn't have an Airstream, but could have a new SOB, I'd probably look at this one: Rockwood Windjammer 2609W Travel Trailer by Forest River, The Original RVWholesalers. New RV's & Parts Sales, Wholesale Dealer

It has quite a bit of room, can be towed by the mentioned F150, and costs somewhat less than the national debt. I've had less "come-backs" and warranty issues with this one, and similar Windjammer models, than most other SOBs we sell.
