Virus Protection - Macbook/ipad

I am looking for recommendations on virus protection for a Macbook Pro and an ipad.
Our company IT manager recommended Intego.
Mac Antivirus & Security

Recommendations?

We have used Intego for years. Who knows how well it really protects, but we have had no security problems with our Macs and the software works completely in the background. The latter is very nice!

I've been working with Macs for the last 15 years and have never bothered with any virus protection. Often, on a Mac, they do more harm than good. There are very, very few true viruses out there for the Mac. REcently there's bee a number of Trojan Horses, but they needed direct interaction, i.e. the user needed to click a link or download a file.

The iPad especially is pretty much bullet-proof at this time.

iPad, iPhones, and iPods are safe unless you have hacked yours. Keep in mind that all software you get comes through Apple so it is has been checked prior to selling. That's why the Android market has already had its share of issues do to the multiple software sources.

I don't have virus protection on my Mac's. The day will come when the hacker community will decide that they want to attack us. Right now a lot more Windows users and more worthwhile to attack those folks.

Definitely needed. I recently started using Avast and Sophos (both freeware) after my iMac was infected. The Avast is more active, identifying malware on sites that you are visiting before you click. Both were recommended by the IT folks at the company I work at.

Sure seems like a divided audience.....
Like most folks I purchase things and bank on-line so I am worried about this and I am new to the Mac side of things. Coming from very limited IT experience I would think a Mac would also be vulnerable to viruses and folks poking around for my information. I have been in the PC world since ~ 1990, didn't like the newer Windows operating systems so I decided to make a change. I think the Ipad also had something to do with this - it is enjoyable to use.
I did some more research on Intego and it seems to at least scan the ipad when it is plugged into the Macbook. This would eliminate purchasing a separate software.
I'm going research a bit more and thanks for the comments.

Ditto MurreyWalker . . . I've driven all Apple's products since the first Mac, and still do. We currently run two iPhones, two iPads, four MacBook Pros, and one big Mac Pro. Once installed a Norton product and regretted it ever since. No Need to burden your Macs.

I use ClamXAV. It is free and works well without eating up memory.

It does have an annoying habit of calling all emails from American Express and Cabela's, viruses.

I too have used macs for the last 25 yrs. Never had a virus or malware until very recently. Apple products aren't invulnerable, there just hasn't been interest in the "hacking" community in writing Apple specific viruses as they were such a niche product. Well, they are much more popular now, and a bigger target as well.
