My mom relies on me for a lot of technical, computer & privacy advice. She was all hopped up over zabasearch a couple weeks back. To me this is nothing more than a computerized version of the old city directories. Interesting business plan that they want to charge you to see more of your own info. Ching-ching!

Jack, you ever Google on your home area code-phone number? It will show up unless you are unlisted or have oddball phone service (like Roadrunner long distance).

My brother thought he could eliminate junk snail mail and certain telephone calls by playing dead. He’s careful with Email accounts, would rubber stamp mail “Deceased, Return to Sender,” and answer some phone calls by saying ‘that person died.’ It worked fine for a while until a credit card company closed his account.
Communications databases are interconnected- -we’re caught under the big world wide web, and we there is no escape.
Another good reason to boondock off the grid.

With all of the concern about these issues, it still amazes me how many people on this site put their DOB on their profile and don't hide it. With a name and DOB you can get an awful lot of info. Sure there may be other ways of getting the same info, but don't make it so easy.

I love messing with data...

...does anyone remember that Calvin and Hobbes comic strip. There was a great one, which reminds me of myself and how I handle data collection on me....

Calvin: "I'm filling out a survey for 'Chewing' magazine. See, they asked how much money I spend on gum each week, so I wrote, '$500.' For my age, I put '43,' and when they asked what my favorite flavor is, I wrote 'garlic/curry'."

Hobbes: "This magazine should have some amusing ads soon."

Calvin: "I love messing with data."

My favorite thing to do when I receive a warranty card with a survey on it is to fill it out using a different middle initial so I can track who is selling my name. Of course, except for my address, all the information in the form is bogus. I'm still receiving junk mail from a warranty card I filled out back in 1992 for a chain saw I purchased. Boy, if only I could get a penny for every time my information was sold...

I tried that one - it doesn't seem to work very good for me. It does pull up name and date of birth, but if I click the name it takes me to youtube. If I click on more information, it pulls up a meaningless search that doesn't include the name I was looking for?
...Anyways, I use USA People Search. It works great! Pulls up many results on each name, some old, some new, some accurate, some way off. They all work on the same principal, compiling information from public records, etc. If you're trying to track down someone you know/knew, you're able to sift thru the info to narrow it down to the right person. Too funny - I just searched me on it, and found out my "possible" wife has aged 10 years

John - that link may be an urbanlegend link, but it has circulated as a "real" email many times - I've gotten it a couple times - forwarded from people I thought were a little smarter than that. The original html source code on it activated a virus/trojan horse in your computer

I think people get overwrought about this privacy stuff. That bit of livestock strolled out the barn door decades ago.

Of course I'm an elitist. Look around you.
