Vermont looking to tax miles driven

On the local news this morning they reported that the state of Vermont (due to loss of gasoline tax revenue because of hybrid cars, car pooling, people driving less miles because of cost, etc.) is looking at taxing the miles driven. Vermont is looking at GPS devices to track your mileage. I hope the good citizens of Vermont can stop any legislation that would allow government to track you.

Wow, that really is unacceptable.

It certainly seems government at all levels continues to place itself above the needs of the people.

Government is like a baby. An alimentary canal with a big appetite at one end and no responsibility at the other. Ronald Reagan.

Let's put this another way. Should you be taxed for something you don't use? If you use the roads more by driving more miles, perhaps you should pay more towards their upkeep.

Of course, higher gas taxes would basically achieve this - the more you drive, the more gas you buy. But they're politically unpalatable. Putting a GPS system on your car will probably be seen as being worse...

From previous articles on this kind of thing, my understanding was while the decreased revenue from gas taxes are a problem for road maintenance and repair, the use of GPS-judged mileage driven as a basis for a substitute tax to take up the slack would be more progressive than a flat tax for all.

How would this affect out of state vehicles. And I hope no one in the N.J. Legislature gets this idea. Sal

Perhaps a review of an individual's true total tax rate would change the minds of those that seem so willing to give the government more money.

At least in my state we pay income tax, sales tax, real estate tax, personal property tax, car tags, government fees on any phone or internet connection, government fees on any energy bill. Fees to add a carport, fees to build a parking place for the Airstream.

They get enough.

It seems the public at large has accepted the training to simply say "Well, I guess they need it.",put our heads down and pay.

End of rant.

Nope, that's aleady done through your cell phone!

Once again a few people making rules for all on what you should drive, then after they figure out the rule they just made gets them less money, they change the rules again to make up for something they forgot about in the first place!

Maybe it's time to start pulling the old 60's, 70's and 80's cars out fo the junkyards, throw away your cell phones, pay cash for everything and live a life with only your family knowning your business.

Enjoy,

Sorry, I already pay $500 a year in taxes on my vehicles, plus tags, plus the $1400 highway use tax I paid when I bought my truck. This state also gets $.35 a gallon in fuel tax.
Would it be too much to suggest the state governments stop building brass-plated rest rooms, and use the income they already get to maintain what they already have? Tuesday on the way to work, there were 12 vehicles sitting along the road with destroyed wheels, tires, and suspension parts that occurred when they hit giant potholes in the road the state couldn't afford to repair, yet the state is building more new roads all around the road that they can't afford to repair.

Here in GA we pay a yearly VAT type tax on our cars, and trailers, boats, motorcycles, etc. In my county it can be hundreds different than in the county down the street. Now that makes no sense, but its like a property tax.
We also now have to pay sales tax on used cars that we buy privately. And new cars sales tax has a huge fee which is supposed to off set the VAT but who the heck thought that up?
