Nate isn't expected to be any worse than a Cat1 by the time it makes landfall. That's not a whole lot worse than a bad thunderstorm around these parts.

I guess I'm one of those people that runs towards the hurricane! LOL!! We were camping in the Smoky Mountains National Park at Elkmont Oct 1-4 in our '55 Flying Cloud. It was great, no cell service or wifi, no hookups. We started towards Jonesborough, TN yesterday to the National Storytelling Festival when we got the news about Nate at 12:30pm. We ate lunch & then did a u-turn and drove 600 miles home. Got home at 12:30am this morning. Went to work today to make some storm preparations and will prepare the home & yard tomorrow. Well, I've been through Camille in '69 (Cat 5) and Katrina in '05. I now live one block from the beach. Ahh, life on the Mississippi Gulf Coast! Gotta love it!

Yesterday Nate passed pretty close to Buoy 42056, 120 NM ESE of Cozumel Mexico, and SW of the western tip of Cuba, as this chart suggests. Maximum wind gusts were 60 knots, or about 70 MPH:

Here is the overview of buoys in the area:

http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/maps/West_Caribbean.shtml

At the top of this chart, the yellow arrow will lead to an overview of the buoys closer to New Orleans.

Buoy 42001, 180 NM S of Southwest Pass LA, should start showing some action today:

Unfortunately, these buoys do not collect wave height data. The charts should update in real time over the weekend.

Stay safe on the Gulf Coast!

Peter

Tomorrow, 10/7, we are planning to head southwest ultimately to Highland Haven Airstream Park near Roanoke, VA with a few days in the Shenandoah National Park. Of course the hurricane is projected to track right over these areas. We will be traveling down I-81.

The forecast is for heavy rain and moderate winds. Highland Haven is right on the top of the mountain. I am considering cancelling the trip due to this storm.

Any thoughts?

It is official the Mississippi Gulf Coast is safe. Jim Cantore has moved east to Alabama.

Hi

In keeping with my record this year .... yes indeed, it looks like the tail end of this one may (or may not) pass over our campsite as it heads back into the Atlantic. I'm not to worried about that part of it.

I do hope there isn't something strange as it hits the gulf coast.....

Bob

So you moved toward the strong northeast quadrant of the storm to get away from the eye. I would have thought a move to the west or northwest would have been better.

Not meaning any harm to you and yours, but if Nate got your memo and shifts east away from Biloxi to follow you, that moves him farther away from me, and I will thank you profusely for your foresight.

Please reread my previous post. I have not moved anywhere. I posted that Cantor moved to Alabama. He has been in Gulfport for the last couple of days. He moved to Dauphin Island to be more precise.
