Total Solar Eclipse - August 21, 2017

There will be a total solar eclipse across parts of the United States on August 21, 2017. That’s a Monday so start planning now for a long weekend.Post any related information on this thread to share information with others who may want to enjoy this unusual event. Perhaps interested Airstreamers will put together rallies to watch (not with the naked eye) the eclipse.

There will be plenty of places to see the eclipse in a band from the southeast to northwest U.S. Some of the nearby cities include: Charleston, SC, Nashville, TN, Cape Girardeau, MO (near the area of greatest eclipse duration), St. Louis, MO and Kansas City, MO/KS will be near the edge of the viewing band. The swath continues across NE, WY ID and OR.

If anyone decides to get a group together to participate please post a link to your thread or Facebook page, etc. on this thread so we can all see what’s going on.

Here’s a map to aid in determining the path of the eclipse.

http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEgoogl...21Tgoogle.html

Thanks to Thalweg for bringing up this subject on a recent boondocking/rockdocking trip in WY.

Here's a screen shot to show the map overview:

Thanks for starting this thread Lucius. This will be a good place to keep track of our discussions of a possible group trip.

Like I said on the other thread, I don't anticipate planning much until Spring. Currently, there's too much time for things to fall apart.

Full.

Oregon State Parks takes reservations 9 months in advance. I think November 21 is going to be like iPhone preorder night.

East of the Mississippi, I am considering trying to put a reservation into the US Corp of Engineers' Seven Points campground on J Percy Priest Lake, about 10m east of Nashville, or possibly (better,) Land Between the Lakes national Recreation Area in Golden Pond KY. I think the latter would be better as I would also want to do some night telescope viewing as well and the ambient light ought be far less.

I think I'll put in a reservation for the former, then wait for the latter to open up in February; and if I can get it, cancel the first.

If any east coasters want to make a small rally of it, let me know?

For those interested in viewing the eclipse go here to get your eclipse glasses.

http://www.eclipse2017.org/2017/path_through_the_US.htm

The above site will also link shutterbugs to info about photographing the eclipse.

Besides Amazon, you can purchase the Eclipse Bulletin at Sky and Telescope (same price). They also sell SkyWatch 2017, charts, globes, books and magazines.

Headed to Southern Illinois for that weekend, possibly Trail of Tears Park in MO - too early to make reservations yet, only taken 6 months in advance.

We will be flying the route while taking pictures of the eclipse from a computer stabilized platform. We will be flying at an altitude above 45k ft. .Pictures should be great.

We'll be on the ground, cursing the passing jet that ruined our pictures!

Just kidding - sounds like an amazing and memorable plan.

Oconee State Park (upstate SC) is at ground zero, Dreher Island State Park (near Columbia SC) is just a mile or two off of the centerline. We'll probably be on a pontoon on Lake Murray.

We have a campsite in the Grand Tetons for the eclipse. Anyone else? It would be fun to gather together for support and merrymaking.

Let me know if you are going to be the area,
Sandy

We're a little slow here in Western Washington (in the sticks)... Just learned about this eclipse. Last night we attempted to get a reservation at Champoeg State Park in Oregon... full up for Sunday the 20th. We did get reservations there for a few days later in the week though. We will be imposing on relatives in Silverton, OR to park out trailer for the big event which should be right on the path! Looking forward to seeing this sight!

I started looking for places last November in Oregon, all the State parks in the path are full along with camp grounds close to the center of totality. Coming from CA, I did find a couple in the path but way off Center to be open. I decided to stay in Corvallis and drive a half hour north to be at the center of the path. This makes a difference of almost a minute of totality.
