Made reservations at Trail of Tears State Park outside of Cape Girardeau MO. Called back when the 6 month window opened for advance reservations, and barely got in. Anyone else there?
Viewing glasses from Eclipse2017.org - inexpensive, made in USA, said to meet ISO standards.

We will be camping at Indian creek campground in Cherokee NC for the eclipse.
We thought we'd try to see it from Clingmans dome but that is serviced by bus only that day and sold out a long time ago.
Should be fun.

To offer similar info to what other have, we have an assortment of viewing gear. Because I'm the biggest nerd I bought #14 filters for welding goggles. We have normal sunglass-style goggles for my partner and his family and each pair of those came with a couple pair of cardboard-with-exposed-film spares so we'll be able to share with the unprepared on the mountain. We didn't get any goggles for the dog, but I'm pretty sure he's smart enough not to look at it or he'd be blind already.
We rented a motorhome out of Denver for my partner's dad and sisters, who are flying into Denver to meet us. We, of course, are doing the Flying Cloud thing.

We're at Wind River RV Park in Riverton, WY. We made our reservations here in January because our third grandchild was due 1 June. At that time they asked if we would be staying for the eclipse and warned us that they were doubling the prices for then. We said we would be long gone by then. When we arrived here they again reminded us that the prices would double for the eclipse.
We're old enough to remember eclipses when we were younger, so we'll let the young people have the good viewing spots. We'll be elsewhere.

Double? Pfft! The boondocking sites at the county park on Casper Mountain are 6x the normal $10/night rate, w/ a 5-night minimum. * cough*
Ah, well, I've spent more on less....

Instructions for Observing the Total Solar Eclipse in Wyoming
Issued by the U. S. Naval Observatory, Washington:
'Instructions for Observing the Total Solar Eclipse'. There are 30 pages and three engraved plates. During the Eclipse there is also a chart of Planets and and Stars in the vicinity of the Sun that can be seen.
It was recommended that those viewing the Eclipse directly... Having something to light up anything that you are using to sketch the Corona, as the lighting may not enough to see your paper.
"Finally, two or three minutes before the beginning of totality, let the observer close his eyes and cover them with a handkerchief, so as to make them as sensitive as possible."
I leave the rest of the instructions up to all of you. "These are instructions issued to the government eclipse expeditions and sent out by various nations during the last ten years."
Oh... for you old timers who may remember. This was the Total Eclipse of July 29, 1878. Please post your sketches.
Find this paper on a search of FREE government publications. I have the 1878 copy... but will avoid the handkerchief technique.

MY 1869 Total Eclipse Experience with Wyoming Boondockers
When I was returning my 1878 Total Solar Eclipse paper to my shelf of obscure materials... I discovered a second volume for those of you who may not still be driving, but may recall the event.
Unifreck... Jan and Ed. Ed took some tin types of his observations while on an Expedition with geologists in Wyoming Territory... Hayden Surveys. He still owns his original 1868 Interstate.
Reports on the Total Solar Eclipse of August 7, 1869
U. S. Naval Observatory
Commodore B. F. Sands U. S. N.
This contains 217 pages AFTER the event. Engravings of what was seen.
Beginning of the Eclipse: 4:15PM (Carlyle, IL, 1,100 feet south of Court House, ON the Ohio and Mississippi Railroad)
Total Obscuration: 5:15PM
First Sunlight: 5:17PM
Disappearance of any obscuration of Sun: 6:11PM
Duration of Totality: 1 minute 27 seconds
Your 2017 experience may vary according to the number of Solar Panels upon your roof.

Going down near Clarksville TN, boondocking in the AS on friends land a couple days prior to eclipse event. On the 21st, heading north, early morning, up to Hopkinsville KY to the high school parking lot (reserved site), $30.00 a car load, with large areas on the lawn for pop-up awnings, coolers, and chairs. Hope the weather will cooperate. Awaiting shipment of lens filters from Thousand Oaks Optical.

Wow, hadn't really paid a lot of attention to it but it looks like I'm 2 miles from the center line in Salem SC. Time for a party, I live on 30 acres not saying I could hold a lot of visitors but might be willing to take on a few depending on rain if any body is interested PM me. Also Palmeto cove RV park isn't to far out of range AS www.palmettocove.com

We will be at Platte River RV in Glenrock WY. They have opened up a field for campers for dry camping and I believe there are openings. It is expensive for what it is but it is a matter of high demand and low supply. Weather is normally good in that part of the country.
This is our 3rd eclipse - they are worth the effort! Go if you can.

Sunset Solar Eclipse Campground - Madras, Oregon
Magdalena & I will be arriving at the Sunset Solar Campground at Madras, Oregon on the afternoon of August 17. Anyone else going there? Stop by and introduce yourself. We will be coming down from Sequim, WA and are looking forward to a hot time on the high desert.
Magdalena has designed a commemorative T-Shirt showing an Airstream in the right eye of the sun.
You may check it out here:

I started planning late (in May) and found an isolated place near Mitchell, OR on the OR 207, the Mitchell-Service Creek Highway (Hidden Springs). We are also going for the extremely dark skies (new moon) and so the isolation should mean less crowd and a place to camp. I've been alarmed at the projections and price gouging for established sites for places in eastern OR so we are leaving CA in the Thursday night prior. Kind of wished I booked a place at the Oregon Star Party months ago.
Will be looking for very scenic places to observe the eclipse, possibly at the Painted Hills Overlook nearby, but who knows, it could be on the side of the road depending on crowds. Will also try to look for a dispersed camping spot near the John Day River which could offer relief from the heat.
If anybody else has secured a good spot, I would love to hear.
Clears,
Chris
