Corona and solar flares.

What appear to be solar flares are at 1:00, 3:00, and 11:40 o'clock. Confirmation from solar specialists? Hard to see in this low res version.

Having witnessed the 2012 annular eclipse, I was looking forward to the very unusual light when most of the sun's disc is covered. The light seems silvery blue, and the landscape, while clearly visible and more sharply clear than normal, loses its color, and looks like an old time silver elmusion print made from a glass plate.

This was my first total eclipse and I expected it to be much darker than the 2012 annular eclipse--it wasn't. But from our location you could see Jupiter and a very few of the brightest stars during totality, something you could not see during the annular eclipse.

All the birds went quiet during totality and for quite some time after, but the crickets, which are raucously loud here in Oregon right now, did not sing for us.

Wow! Awesome! Already planning for 2024!

But don't see the 11:40 one. Taken at Lake Simtustus outside of Mardras

The video caught the photobombing parachutist

Mattirs, thanks for sharing your image.

I watched Nova's Eclipse show, which included still photos of the corona taken in Salem, OR. The Salem photos showed what looked like flares at the same 1:00, 3:00, and 11:30 clock positions, so I looked at my and Unifreck's photos to see if the flares appeared in them. And they did.

I think they must be flares as they appear in almost all of our photos, where the Bailey's Beads phenomenon only occurs momentarily just as the moon covers the sun's limb.

Here's another image, taken just before the end of totality, or about a minute after the image in my previous post.

Anybody else get a good photo? Please share!!

Hittenstiehl, if you did not call Jackson Center please advise. Calling them made perfect sense to me as well. We moved back to Ohio and now live just 60 miles from JC. I will be stopping there in a week.

We were lucky enough to view the total eclipse at the Oregon Blackout Rally close to Madras, Oregon. A hearty thanks to all who planned this starting years ago!
I highly encourage anyone who is at all interested to view the next total solar eclipse in 2024. I thought the difference between 98% and 100% coverage was no big deal. I was SO wrong! 100% (totality) is truly awe inspiring. I am still thinking about it.

April 8, 2024

In Tennessee, near where we were, two people flew from England to see it. That was pretty expensive for 2:20 of totality.

This one in 2024 would be the last in the US during most of our lifetimes. Sounds like a good time can be had by all in Indianapolis or Jackson Center. If I'm around, I'll make it.

PurdueMom I have not called yet.

I wanted to look and see when Alumapalooza was an it's in June. I also looked on Google Earth and wanted to see what the surrounding community looked like. Lots of beautiful farm fields but not sure if those would be campable.

We've never been to a gathering of any size so we'll be going somewhere for that eclipse and wouldn't JC be fun.

Not sure if JC would be interested but maybe they could sponsor it if they didn't want to host it and it could be a forum Rally.

Let us know how your visit goes and if you get any reaction on Alumaclipse.

April 8 would be pretty wet in Ohio. I doubt that farms would work out very well.

Sidney is just south of Jackson Center and the center line of the eclipse. The Shelby County Fairgrounds is there and their site says the midway area can be rented. I don't know if they have their own plans for 2024, but fairgrounds usually have large open areas that are either paved or gravel.

Sidney is an interesting little town. While we had our AS repaired in 2015 we drove over there and everyone was very nice, got to see a lot of interesting small town places and dine at The Spot restaurant, history in itself. If you're going to JC, drop by Sidney, check out the courthouse, bank, Spot restaurant and other areas. http://www.thespottoeat.com/

I have a low-def video (sorry, no HD movie camera yet) of the eclipse in Ashland City, TN. It starts just before the totality. I included footage of the shadows, showing just slices of sunlight. Then you can see it go from daylight to dark and back to light. The camera tries to maximize the picture, so it was really a little darker than what you see, but you get the idea. You can just ignore my brother, I usually do.

It's 4 1/2 minutes long.
