Hail storms and corrosion! Previously having fiberglass and being able to take a knocking and easily maintain the gloss with a periodic waxing and a vinyl awning, we had no idea of the upkeep of the aluminum and sunbrella fabric. We asked about the peeling clearcoat of the older models and were told it was no longer a problem with the new Alcoa pretreated panels...there was no indication of the filiment corrosion that was to begin to infest the unit and various parts intrinsically. I would definitely go with an easier care exterior our next time around. Since 2003 we have had 4 brand new and 2 gently used Airstreams. Perhaps a painted clear coated unit would be a better and less expensive choice of exterior. I am of course referring to newer models and not the heavier panels that can be mirror polished of the vintage units.

Depreciation is minimal compared to the Class A, half-million dollar deals!

So buy a vintage unit and rebuild/rework it exactly the way you want....
Buying a new Airstream is like buying a new Porsche - lots of expensive maintenance, but a high "bling" factor.

barts, concur! I just want to "bling" along and not think about what the salesman didn't tell me.

Didn't most of us buy a A/S to escape from reality? I know I did.

First revision, after considerable thought:
#9 should be just "storage" (in general);
#8 should be "sources of water leaks unique to Airstreams"
