There's a Ginormous Hole in My Yard!
Excavation started earlier in the week. A few more loads will be removed tomorrow and we'll be where we need to be for formwork to start. The garage and trailer look like they are precariously perched right on the edge, but there is about 5 feet from the rear of the trailer before a 10 foot vertical drop.

Looks like the project is moving along nicely. Where is the diving board going to be located?
It looks like you are completely cut off from the street at this point. Will you be able to get your trailer on the road again when the project is finished?

Be careful with having the walls of the excavation cut back so steeply. You have a lot of weight surcharge on the edge of your excavation. If a wall blows out you could loose the building next to the hole or your beloved trailer. Look for cracks in the soil.......
Get something back in that hole ASAP!

Richard, after last nights rains a diving board would be awesome! There's a lane right behind the property, so access isn't a problem.
Crispyboy, the soil bearing is excellent. My Structural engineer is happy with it. Still, I'll be happy when the foundations are in place and can be backfilled.

That's a little different! Live in your Airstream next to your giant swimming pool.

We have a problem with Moles and I was really getting angry about it but it looks like your moles are worse. I should be grateful for the problems I have.

Where I live, any hole that size would immediately seep full of water.
No basements around here.

Well, you sure know how to have fun Cameron. Now lets hope you don't walk in your sleep....
How soon do you anticipate being back in the house? By that time you will be extremely initimate with your trailer. You may just want to rent the new place out and continue to live in the trailer. Is there any silver in your build plans?
Keep us updated.

Great photos, Cameront! Keep 'em coming to update us. Always thought the perfect lot for an Airstream would include a giant pond... or in the case of y'all up there in Canada... a skating rink...
You going to charge admission?

Do you have a sketch / drawing of the home that you will be building. Will be interesting to see the progress. Thanks.

If you follow the link in my sig, it will take you to my blog. There is a sketch of the front elevation there.
Barry, the house should be ready to move in towards April/May of 2009. I'm really enjoying living in my trailer so far and have actually thought about what you mention. perhaps rent out the house and go find a small plot of land up Indian Arm or in the valley to park the trailer on and live in. Then again, after a year with two hyper labradors, I might be ready for a little more room.

pictures, pictures, pictures, pictures, pictures, pictures!
Hey Cameron, how's it going? Are your workers on island time? I wouldn't think so. Bet it's rollin' right along. Got any updates? Airstream in the fore- or background preferred!

Bob,
His blog seems to be up to date...
North Vancouver Modern
It looks like they just finished concrete work and are now started on the framing. It looks like a pretty big drop from the back of the Airstream

Those photos on the blog must be photoshopped because they show sunshine and this is Vancouver after all. North Vancouver at that. They don't get sunshine
Looks good Cameron. Must be hard on the pups with all that going on outside all day and them not out there to beg for handouts from the construction workers who are always a sucker for those big brown eyes.

The blog is defionitely the most up to date, in terms of photos. This reminds me that I need to unload some pictures from my camera and post them.
Barry, the framing crew is all East Indian and their absolutely terrified of the dogs. They don't know what they're missing.

Fortunately, we don't have to worry about island time like my parents did at their cottage. Over there, if there is surf, no work gets done. If there's no surf, the crew is either drunk, hungover or baked. And sometimes all three. The nice thing about building on the mainland is that the crews are here to work.

My buddy was doing what you are doing about ten years ago and had two very large dogs. Real barkers but mush pots in reality. The construction guys realized that all it took was a cookie each at coffee break and the dogs were in heaven, did not bark at them, and did not bother them at any other time. They'd greet them at the gate in the morning and watch them go past in their trucks, then sit on the hills of dirt and supervise till coffee break and they'd be at the picnic table long before the workers go there, waiting patiently. We got quite a kick out of it.
Glad your project is moving right along. Looks like our spate of good weather is about to disappear but you've had a good run up till now.
Take care and crack that whip - make them work harder and faster so you can use your Airstream for camping.
Barry

Barry,
Kai and Samm are typical young Labs. I don't know if they're capable of sitting quietly while people are around. The more activity around, the more they want to help!

I bet they'd look really cute wearing little tool belts.
