The Wall...for all
I started to send this to my caring friends...then thought there are many here would like this information and be happy to use it. Hope some will use it and all appreciate what it is telling you.
First click on a state. When it opens, scroll down to the city and the names will appear. Then click on their names.
It should show you a picture of the person, or at least their
bio and medals.
This really is an amazing web site. Someone spent a lot of time and effort to create it.
I hope that everyone who receives this appreciates what those who served in Vietnam sacrificed for our country.
The link below is a virtual wall of all those lost during the Vietnam war with the names, bio's and other information on our lost heroes.
Those who remember that timeframe, or perhaps lost friends or family can look them up on this site.
Pass the link on to others if you like.

This weekend we remember those who gave their lives for our freedom. The wall is a special place for me, one of my best friends in high school was captured by the VC and died as a POW. Let us never forget.

The Wall is not for all...
... a contrarian's point of view.
When the design award was announced, I asked Harry Weese, a member of the committee that chose the design, for a chance to speak to him about how it affected me personally as a Vietnam Veteran.
About 2 million Americans served in Vietnam; about 59,000 are memorialized on the Wall; 4 of my men are on the Wall, one died in combat. At the Wall you descend into the earth past black granite with each panel showing the names of more and more who died because of the way the panels are arranged. All this creates an impression of moving downward deeper and deeper into a dark place. Yes, I am influenced by Heart of Darkness and Apocalypse Now (to me the movie that matches my Vietnam experience most closely, except for the ending). But, I was troubled by the conscious disregard for all but those who died and by the overt symbolism that mirrored attitudes and beliefs about the War, our involvement there, and the character of those who served their country. Heavy stuff, but I experienced first hand the treatment of honorable men being spat upon at National Airport. I witnessed first-hand the outright lies and fabrication by Walter Cronkite of an action in which I was engaged. Americans at home had a very different view of the War than most of us who were there.
Nowhere on the memorial as originally conceived is there any mention, recognition, hint, or acknowledgement implicitly or explicitly of those who served honorably in the War. To many, the Vietnam War was a tragedy or worse and this Wall seemed and seems to me to reflect that feeling.
I realize that my views are at odds with virtually everyones, but that is what I felt then and nothing in the intervening years has changed my initial reaction.
Here in our community we dedicated an Armed Forces Plaza on May 15th. At present there are 530 engraved stones with veterans, their spouses, and entire units covering all American Wars from the Revolution to the present. The stones were donated by individuals and families and organizations on behalf of people who served whether they died in combat or otherwise. Personally, I find this memorial more moving and compelling as a reminder of all who served and how much is asked of those who are on the front line in defense of liberty. The circumstances of their service are less important than the acts of sacrifice and dedication to family and to country that their names signify.

All war memorials probably have some aspect that some people have an issue with, be it an ommission or just a feeling that it could have been done better or differently. And no Mike, I'm not trying to change your feelings at all. What memorials need to remind us of are those brave people that fought, and gave their lives so we can remain free as well as those that fought and came home. All are equally deserving of our thanks and gratitude. What we need to do is remember them all, not only this weekend, but every day. And ensure that the awful, shameful way that many Vietnam veterans were treated when they came back home will never happen again.
Melody, thank-you for the link.
To all veterans and active duty military, my unending thanks.
