Glad to hear that these options can still be avoided. We did the same with our 2000 truck. Evidently, non-option trucks are sometimes called contractor trucks. Fine by me.

We've learned the hard way that electronic control units do go bad, and that manufacturers do not keep producing old ones. Our 96 Honda now has no air bags, no remote lock and no working right-rear window. (By contrast, the MG uses all manual stuff. And all of that stuff is still available, and the company hasn't even existed since 1980.)

My '98 Dodge has wind up windows, manual door locks and a 5 speed manual transmission. It does have cruise control.

Curb feelers

Where are these today?

I could not find new curb feelers when I looked for them in 2008 so modified my GW's "iron board cord holder" to work on the Clipper. It has saved me a couple times over the years.

I mounted it, more for protection/warning of the f/g lower fender when manouvering those tight Tim Hortons parking lots with the cement curbs, than for curb parking. (a good driver should be able to judge his distance from the curb on a regular stop. )

This was a neat Airstream option in the 70s...

A mechanic once told me that engines are no harder to work on today than they were 50 years ago - it's diagnosing the problem that's gotten a lot harder. You need $10,000 worth of gear to figure out what's wrong, but once you do it's still just a matter of unbolting something and replacing it.

Things I miss:
-companies that hire enough employees to actually get the job done (voice mail has made it possible for companies to disguise the fact that they just don't have enough people)
-switchboards and operators - if my call is so "important to you" then why don't you answer the @#*& phone instead of having a machine do it?
-Common courtesy
-cars with road draft tubes. Speaking of which, today car companies brag that their latest model puddle-jumper gets 35 MPG, but my 1970 Fiat 850, with no emission control what-so-ever, routinely got 45MPG.
-shortwave radio
-paying $1 to get into the Fillmore auditorium to see not one, not two, but three big name rock groups.
-not having to be fluent in Spanish to communicate with half the people I deal with daily

I miss that brief period in human history between the discovery of birth control pills and the discovery of HIV/AIDS.

Well, If memory serves you could repair a tuner with a can of cleaner and a few terrycloth towels and it would work like new. Or change out a $1.00 tube and get the TV to work again.... also like new. Try that on todays TV's. Lets see ya make that sensor read the remote in the flat screen in your trailer! Or for that matter how do you repair that remote for under $5.00? So maybe that old B&W rotary channel selector TV wasn't such a bad thing afterall! Ed

Could we not produce today, a mid size auto, that stands out from the "world designs" that you can't distinguish one from the other.

Where have all the imaginative entrepreneurs gone to?

I know it all takes money, but quality on a small scale should ensure surrvival.

What we really need is a great tow vehicle. This design could be updated, couldn't it?

My GW just ordered and received Vinyl LP combined with CD set for one of the popular American Idol stars? (I don't listen to that stuff. ) She plays it on the big old RCA combo unit that still might be quality superior to whats available today?

Vinyl still rules....

One of the best things about it....you have to actually sit down, pay attention, and LISTEN to it, when it's finished it requires you to actually choose what you would like to hear next.

Not so much from "the past" but I am sure missing the local video store.

The mom and pop stores went first, and then Blockbuster about a year ago. I do not have the technology or know how to get onto Netfix etc. I have not seen a new release in over a year.
