I was taught P E M D A S, not P E M&D, A&S.

As a FYI, I saw this problem on another forum and it generated 100+ pages of argument and no mutually agreed answer. I thought it might provoke some nice argument here.

Funny....I double checked myself after you said the answer was 2. I have an iPad calculator app called "MyScript Calculator". You just write the equation out as you would with a pencil. In this case the Apple Pencil. Right or wrong....who knows but the app also says it's 288.

288 may be the right answer! I still see how it could be interpreted as 2, but the 288 argument is gaining steam here…

EDIT: I just ran it in Excel, and it also says 288

Software developer here…all the way back to FORTRAN. And briefly a math major. Computers will:

P, E, M&D, A&S.
Left to right within each.

Don’t know how the teachers learn in it teachers colleges. DW’s teacher training is too long in the tooth to be useful in this case.

Why would you go left to right as opposed to the mathematical order of operations?
You go left to right because M&D and A&S are equal precedence when it comes to ordering of operations.

Wow Fortran...A Fortran class was where I met my wife. That was so long ago we were writing each individual line on a punch card.

407 accounting machine with thousands of relays inside, card reader, line printer, programmed by patch panels. Shook the room when it was running. Ours chewed holes into the concrete floor under it.

In the spirit of the times, the answer to the math problem is 67.4. I will not disclose how I got the answer and I know it is right regardless of “mathematics”. The clue is take the number of illuminati (cannot be disclosed at this time) and multiply by Avocado’s Constant, a number related to how many times the earth revolves around the moon in a parsec.

Mathematics is something you have to believe whether is true (or not).

True (or not). The answer I got using generally unacceptable principals has been tested by numerous unprofessional commentators who also can diagnose any problem with any RV or tow vehicle in moments regardless of the complexity of the so-called problem. These principals and their assistants, vice principals, are quite concerned whether you got to school on time today. Stand in the corner for one hour.

Do these commentators favor 1/2 ton trucks or heavy duty trucks as a tow vehicle?

or, you could try an easier one: Solve for X, or is it y?

Yes.

But some disagree. One example is the Yugo Girl half track.

Somewhere there is a Yugo that has never failed at anything, has hundreds of thousands of miles on it and tows a Bambi.

As for the commentating computer experts, possibly all named Consuelo, they or she agrees that 1/2 ton and heavy duty trucks can, and asks in return, will they?

Tomorrow in Grand Junction there will be 2 more seconds of daylight. If I were there, I would dance naked on Main St. to welcome the return of the golden orb, but instead I will be across the mountains eating too much in the spirit of the Solstice.

Still trying to figure out how to answer the comment, "Gosh - you play a lot of golf! You must be pretty good by now!"

Sigh...
