Of course you can! But you have to plan ahead. As a not-so-close friend of mine— who is a real bast… (ahem!) jerk— once said, "If you ever want to get away with being a bast… (I mean) jerk, you have to always be a bast… (I mean) jerk."

Is smartness enlightenment?
Something just occurred to me.
I just realized, while reflecting on my life, that I believe I've done every dumb thing I have been able to think of.
Does that mean that I have finally achieved "Smartness?".

Only if you learned your lesson and don't do those dumb things anymore. You have to go forth and do NEW dumb things, not the same dumb things over and over.

Mostly, I do the dumb things I thought were smart until I reflect upon them later.

Many people, especially teenagers, have reached "smartness".
That's why encylopedia "Britannica" went broke.

Yeah, that pretty much goes without saying. I either thought they were smart, or didn't think at all. At times, dumb things seem so smart, I don't even bother to think about them.
Whoops, I just found a flaw in my "try every dumb thing you can think of and, eventually you'll achieve Smartness" theorem. I just realized there are many dumb things, I have done more than once. I think I'm losing this argument with myself. Now I think starting it was a dumb thing.

Human beings are as smart as they will ever be along about the age of 18. We spend the rest of our lives realizing that we weren't that smart after all.

I was smart much longer than that. I was somewhere between 25 and 40 when some of the smart things I had done in my life, started to turn dumb.
Maybe it's kind of like fine wine. If you leave the cork out of smart long enough, it starts to turn dumb.

Some science fiction author— I can't remember which one anymore— called it the "Theory of Teenage Evolution."
In order for society to advance instead of stagnating, children have to do something different than their parents. For the whole of the dark ages, if your parents were farmers, you were pretty much destined to be a farmer, and nothing ever changed for a thousand years.
It wasn't until teenagers learned to be so smart (or at least smart-mouthed) that their parents kicked them out of the house and made them get a different job that society started making progress.

Well... I agree! And by gum they be doing dat!!!! Keeeyaw!
I decided one day... I was going to handle my sons like this... A-B-D-C
Ask them..
"Have you thought about A
Have you thought about B
Have you considered D
Well, seems you thought this thru... Have answered to your satisfaction all you need to act...
So, remember, we will always love you, perhaps not always like you but wish you well."
If they ask where the "C" is... I say, "oh, that stands for Consequences... And you did not mention that in our talk...
It means "I KNOW that is gonna HURT!"
Then... Walk away...

And why do Airstream locks lock and unlock in the opposite directions than all the other locks in the world? Between the door lock and the deadbolt, it is cruelly humorous to hand someone the keys, like a border customs officer, for example, give them about 5 minutes to try and figure it out, and then have them come back and say, "would you please unlock it for me?"

Being a lefty, it turns just fine for me. But since I have an Interstate I seldom have to lock or unlock a trailer. Maybe the trailers should have electronic locks like the Interstates do, so you just have to stand close and push a button on the key?
And anyway, did you mean "cruelly humorous" or "humorously cruel"? I think the latter is more descriptive of the actual case…

No, I can't. Never had the stuff. I'm still trying to figure out the point of grits; near as I can tell, grits is what people eat when they don't know how to make cornbread.

The Argue Thread
Humans are not nearly as smart as they want to suppose. As a rule they know what the right thing is, but don't do it...
As a rule, most people are driven by emotion, desire, and ego,,,, and are quick to mock and ridicule those who defer to sound reason, asserting that they are simplistic...

Someone here on the Forums has a tagline to the effect that you can't reason a person out of an opinion that he has not reasoned himself into.
Just like debates on television. A debate never makes anyone change their mind, it only reinforces the opinions of those whose mind is already made up, and confuses the undecided.

Lol, I l don't think there has been a real debate on television in my lifetime.
What we have are "media events" of for and by media people trying to show us how clever they are...
That is the real truth..
AND.... Practicality is a major component of reason...
The biggest lesson we should take from "the argue thread" is to try and enjoy the banter...
(I have had a few cocktails this evening)
