Hi, not until 1954. These were on 54, 55, & 56 Fords and Mercurys.

I don't know Bob if I might be considered one of those "rich people" because I paid $200.00 for my first car in 1966. It was a 1956 Studebaker Golden Hawk. Mine was yellow and white and didn't nearly as good as this one. It did run like a striped a** ape especially in the hands of a 17 year old kid.
I don't still have it however a few years ago I came across one for sale and it turned out to serial #1 built in the Los Angeles plant and is now sitting in my garage waiting for me to start it's restoration. One more thing on my "to do list".
Now we can argue about early high performance cars.
Cheers, Dan

Those STUD Hawks were awesome? I never owned one, but I think they are on my top 10 list.
Did you guys not take pictures of all your cars?

Not that I want to argue, but I recall from my youthful years that Studebakers were bad cars and by the 50's, no one wanted to buy them. It may look cool, but mechanically it was backward and unreliable.

My uncle, back then, had a Stude dealership in Buffalo, New York.
He did very well with it.

In the early years Studebakers were up there with Cadillacs, Duesenburgs, and Packards. They were big luxury cars.
In 63 my parents were looking at Studebakers. They considered an Avanti. but bought a Lark. I ran that thing into the ground. About 10 years or so after Studebaker closed Avanti came back for a lot more $.

Now I know why Buffalo lost 300,000 people from the 50's to the 70's. It was the Studebakers.
They made good wagons back in the 19th century.
I guess I have aroused some Studebaker fans. Where were you when they were losing market share in the '50's? At least they outlasted Packard and Hudson. Then there was DeSoto; Groucho Marx couldn't save that one.
Not to argue….

Hi, actually some Studebakers were innovative and many people think they had Ford engines because they used the same size engines. [289] A 1953 Studebaker is one of the best cars made for running in places like Bonneville Salt Flats. Some of the last Studebakers had a bunch of gaudy junk attached to them and Packard name plates.

Speaking of the Avanti, and other '60's era Euro-style sports cars......
Roger Moore was by far the best Double-0-7. Best Music, Best Locations, Best Bond-girls. Apologies to Sean Connery.

As this is the argue thread, I will have to say Sean Connery was the true 007 man. Those shows were a bit more realistic for the time.

OK, random from the previous but here goes:
Ford vs. Dodge
I decided my 2005 Dodge diesel automatic 2wd with 3.73 gearing had to go. Towed like a bat out of hell but had a couple of close calls wrt to getting stuck and in places I had no business towing anyway. So traded it in on a 2002 4x4 Ford F350 dually with the 7.3 and a manual tranny and 4.10 gears.
Now in my opinion after 250 miles and no towing, the Dodge had way better power but the fit/finish of the Ford was much better. I thought I was going to be too cool for school with the manual and found myself stranded a couple of times not being able to get into the next gear up or down. The auto was pretty darn nifty at this and guys, I can handle a 10speed eaton fuller with even blinking, the ford 6 left me feeling like an idiot a couple of times.
I need to set up the ford for towing my trailer, then will come back with the final opinion and like many things, it will probably be dependent on the situation for pros/cons. Stuck on a mountain road, the ford, flat towing on the interstate and I bet the Dodge will have done the better job. I had 14.3 mpg all miles on the dodge. Had a real shock in the ford when I hit 75, reset the mpg and was at like 13.0. But then recalled the whole gear thing, backed out of it to 70 and mpg was steady at 15.7 for a few hundred miles but no towing. So I am guessing that the 5.9 is going to be hard to beat from an mpg perspective.
So opinions on this old chestnut?
