Liberation Day - May 5th?

Hello JimHoek -

I presume you are referring to Liberation Day. Please tell us more about this commemoration. Pictures, newspaper articles, other...

Are there any Canadians (or others) out there who were part of the liberating forces? If not directly involved, maybe a father or grandfather, who was part of the liberation forces. It would be interesting to hear their stories.

Lucius

Hi Lucius,

Yes, this was our yearly commemoration of Liberation day.
Here's a link to the local newspaper:
Van Hello Again naar Farewell - Apeldoorn - Regio - Stentor
In Dutch, of course...
Every year we have veterans and their family come over and commemorate with us. For the last decade, every five year thereís a big one, like now.

Regards, Jim.

Regards, Jim.
Today the most of Canadian war veterans step on the plane homeward. In the past twelve days they visited large commemorations in among others cavities, Groesbeek and Wageningen. Gistermiddag were there the parade closed by Apeldoorn, where the most in the Netherlands staying Canadian veterans were at present. They were transported in jeeps and legertrucks. An individual went at foot. Old faces, some visible tired - but also under the impression of the public interest. Underway they got applause. And of course there a lot of ' became from the jeeps; high fives' distributed. Tienduizenden witnesses had come thank the liberators to the Loolaan, Kerklaan and Deventerstraat for the very last time. The motto of the festive parade was: Hello Again! But it became therefore: Farewell! Because such parade - such as Apeldoorn which has had since 1985 for the five years - does not return. For that in the place in desire rum years (next in 2015,) a festival it will be kept in Omnisport. vanmiddag the first edition of that for free accessible music festival was, with an action of Waylon and in.the.presence.of princess daisy. Compared to five years suffered less witnesses stood along the route and less houses had been decorated. But ranging rijendik stood public on the cross point of the Deventerstraat and the church alley, where the dozens military brass bands beat rechtsaf and the parade himself linksaf went. Whole in Canada rechtsstreeks on television it was shown. Vanochtend take ' Apeldoornse veteranen' farewell of the Netherlands at the Canadian club. A couple to go still by to NormandiŽ. Also: for the last time.

My father was born in Holland but came to Canada with my grandparents at the age of 2. In 1940 he got a draft notice from the Dutch army but it was too late, he had already joined the Canadian army.

Every year the Dutch plant a flower bed of tulips in front of the Canadian Parliament buildings. I think that is a nice gesture, from the only people in Europe who do not forget their friends.
