Here's a picture that a friend shot out on the deck of his house.
We think it's a rat snake constricting a Texas night snake.

Ran across this one in Wind River Canyon in WY. It was laying on the asphalt of one of the many turnouts. It was dead and probably had been freshly hit by a car. It didn't appear to have any noticeable trauma and looked like it could just crawl off. Don't have any idea what kind of snake it was.

That's a Bullsnake. They are non-poisonous but depending on how they are approached can be mean as hell. They eat rodents too.

Thanks for the information. It was a beautiful snake. Just crossed the road at the wrong time, I guess.

In these parts we have some rattlers. Hardly ever see em. Plenty of bull snakes, corn snakes, rat snakes and milk snakes, the names of which are often interchanged. A corn snake looks different but bull snakes and rat snakes I think are the same critter. A corn snake is brown and yellow. Anybody have a difinitive answer about are these different types of snakes?

Yeah, Jim, that looks like a Kingsnake...fortunately. Farmers like to keep 'em in barns and stuff as free rodent removal service. You should make him a nest in your garage!

Rat snakes and Bull snakes are different critters. Being in New Mexico the type of rat snake you are probably referring to is the Trans Pecos Rat Snake which is genus Elaphe, while the Bullsnake is genus Pituophis. They kind of look similar but have different habits and scale types. Rat snakes have lightly keeled scales, while bull snakes are sharply keeled. Reptile scales are generally smooth or have a ridge called a keel. When describing snake scales, think of the bottom of a boat. A smooth scale would be like the bottom of a kayak, a lightly keeled scale would have a ridge like a row boat, and a sharply keeled scale would be like a sailboat.
The milk snakes you probably have there are Mexican Milk snakes and have a beautiful bold red-black-yellow pattern. While they are non-poisonous, they resemble a Coral Snake which is poisonous and has a red-yellow black pattern. This is a defense mechanism for the harmless milk snake.
Corn snakes are different still. They have a mild temperament and can make good pets. They are commonly sold in pet shops.

You can remember it this way:
"Red next to yellow, kill a fellow"
There are no Asps in the U.S., so you don't have to worry about them unless somebody's pet escapes. There are only 4 types of venemous snakes native to the U.S....Rattlesnakes, Copperheads, Cottonmouths and Coral Snakes.

When I was a kid in the Bronx my grandfather in Ohio had a little farm complete with an outhouse. Since then I have always had a fear of outhouses because my cousin who lived down the road in Ohio told me about the hoop snakes that live in outhouses lying in wait for an unsuspecting victim to have a seat. The hoop snakes travel from outhouse to outhouse by grabbing their tail with their mouth and rolling. Thanks for Herpes 101 snake poop Streamer, but where do these serpents fall? Now that really sounds like genius snakes? And what about the milk snake? Is it true they got their name from their abilty and grab hold of a cow's udder?

Marshall, Your cousin was yanking your chain about the "Hoopsnakes". I can assure you that no snake has the ability to grab it's tail and roll! I don't know where milk snakes got their name, but it's a Wive's tale about any snake miliking a cow!

From Wikipedia:
Quote:
An early myth about milk snakes is that they suck cow udders to get the milk. The myth is entirely false. The milk snake does not have the physical capabilities to suck milk out of a cow. Milk snakes are, however, frequently found in and around barns, making use of their cool and dark environments, and for the easily accessed populations of rodents to feed on. This proximity to barns, and therefore cows, probably gave rise to the myth.
