You can remember it this way:

"Red next to yellow, kill a fellow"

There are no Asps in the U.S., so you don't have to worry about them unless somebody's pet escapes. There are only 4 types of venemous snakes native to the U.S....Rattlesnakes, Copperheads, Cottonmouths and Coral Snakes.

When I was a kid in the Bronx my grandfather in Ohio had a little farm complete with an outhouse. Since then I have always had a fear of outhouses because my cousin who lived down the road in Ohio told me about the hoop snakes that live in outhouses lying in wait for an unsuspecting victim to have a seat. The hoop snakes travel from outhouse to outhouse by grabbing their tail with their mouth and rolling. Thanks for Herpes 101 snake poop Streamer, but where do these serpents fall? Now that really sounds like genius snakes? And what about the milk snake? Is it true they got their name from their abilty and grab hold of a cow's udder?

Marshall, Your cousin was yanking your chain about the "Hoopsnakes". I can assure you that no snake has the ability to grab it's tail and roll! I don't know where milk snakes got their name, but it's a Wive's tale about any snake miliking a cow!

From Wikipedia:
Quote:
An early myth about milk snakes is that they suck cow udders to get the milk. The myth is entirely false. The milk snake does not have the physical capabilities to suck milk out of a cow. Milk snakes are, however, frequently found in and around barns, making use of their cool and dark environments, and for the easily accessed populations of rodents to feed on. This proximity to barns, and therefore cows, probably gave rise to the myth.
