Unfortunately many states have gone to the way of only giving residents the discounts which can range from 10 to 50%. South Carolina SP only give senior discounts for residents only, recognize handicap for state residents, Tenn has gone the same direction with its seniors discounts, some other states have been following. Here in Tenn when they changed theirs their excuse was that SP's are used mostly by locals and the extra cost and income loss for those few non state residents are not worth it. Unfortunately when TN did that in 2014 it was mid year and caused a major uproar, but nothing can be done until the new state senate/congress reconvenes in 2015, I already a senator and congressman who I am friends with are going to help me file amendments to change this in addition to making our SP's more traveler friendly and enticing. We do have some state parks that are gorgeous, and some that need major updates, but convincing the State that there can be an income in it is going to be an up hill battle.
But I am going to try

That's pretty much inevitable. Just as the Federal Government's fiscal year begins on the 1st of October, most states' fiscal years begin the 1st of July. So changes tend to start mid-year with the new fiscal year.

For what it's worth, the Federal Government's fiscal year used to begin on the 1st of July as well. Right up until 1976, when Congress decided it needed longer to pass a budget, so they pushed the start of the fiscal year back three months and so had one fifteen-month fiscal year, instead of just admitting that they are going to be late because of the opposite party's opposition like they do now.

I would be surprised if state parks across the country agreed to give seniors a 50% discount, but it never hurts to try.

I think it is in Ohio that the state parks honor Passport America Sun-Thurs, whch gives you 50% off.

We have found state parks nationwide pretty ridiculously expensive, and just generally learned to avoid them.

COE, National Forest and National Parks are much more reasonable, and frequently nicer.

PA for an overnight stay is almost always cheaper than a state park, too.

Spend less, do more.
