Has anyone ever heard of a model called the Spaceliner? This guy claims it is ultra rare and he has one…

Thinking I have. The floor plan anyway. Gotta look at some old issues of ASL.

in contacting the seller it turns out I made the eyebrow for this trailer. It's a small world I guess.

I'm also familiar with the seller. Yes, the vintage Airstream world is very small.

I think this trailer is actually a 1961 model.

Hi Frank:
Keep the reason to yourself but try to get over it. There are some good Airstream history articles in Airstream Life magazine. The Winter 2012 issue also describes the 18' Comet and the 18' Comet II and shows floor plans for both along with the floor plan for the 22' Spaceliner. You may have seen or even worked on a 22' Spaceliner without realizing it. It's never too late to learn new things about old Airstreams.

Is the door original? I thought the Bambi was the only trailer to have the window in place of the door with in the door?

Seems like a nice plan. I wonder how close to his "buy it now" price he set the reserve? 'cause that interior doesn't represent a $12,500 trailer to me, and makes me wonder if he polished the outside without checking the state of the subfloor first...

Louvered window in door appears original

Hi vinstream:
The 22' Spaceliner was a limited production California trailer built mostly during the 1961 model year. I believe it had the louvered window in its door from the factory primarily because its floor plan below shows a window in the door rather than a door-within-a-door as used on most other 1961 Airstreams. It's a nice floor plan that for more than a decade has often been misidentified as a 1961 "Safari". Click on he thumbnail below to enlarge and enjoy it.

How very very interesting. I had one!
I was never able to identify just what it was until this thread came up. I bought if for $1500 one cold day in early March 2002. SN was 22TDS S0523 and made in 10 60. I just found my numerous photos of it and had taken a picture of the ID plate. The interior plan is the one shown above by Fred C. It had the window in the door, and hydraulic brakes, and conventional springs, not the dura torque axle. The interior was in much much better condition than the one shown in the ebay listing, but it did have floor issues.
I didn't keep it for too long, maybe a year or two, and then a guy came along and wanted it very badly. He subsequently had the interior re done, and then, on his maiden voyage trip to the mid west, a Tractor Trailer rig ran a red light and T boned the Airstream trailer for a total loss.
Now I know what it was at any rate. I had always wondered as it was unlike any plan I had ever found.

Spaceliners are still misidentified as Safaris . . .

Spaceliners never had their own exterior name script, making them difficult to identify without recognizing their distinctive floor plan. Here are three Spaceliners which are still misidentified as 1961 Safaris:
1. 1961 Safari 22' #22-TDSS0548 - Vintage Airstream
This one has a later model year "Safari" name script attached that perpetuates its misidentification. Note the louvered window in the rear-hinged door, the small black California Division of Housing compliance plate and the distinctive floor plan inside.
2. 1961 Safari 22' - Vintage Airstream
The "L" shape dinette seating and table opposite the galley have been removed and replaced by a longer gaucho in this Spaceliner.
3. 1961 Safari 22' #22-TDSS0544 - Vintage Airstream
This one at least includes an acknowledgement that it has the "Spaceliner" layout, although it is still mislabeled as a 22' Safari.

Not as rare as one would like it to be

So with three of the seven 1961 22' trailers under the "Safari" section of the Vintage Airstream photo archives Spaceliners, It would seem that these Spaceliners are not as rare as some would have you believe.
Great info Fred. Thanks!

If the trailer has the electrical diagram above the breaker box it should have trailer model, mine says Spaceliner. My Spaceliner is #0429.
