Smile Snow in Phoenix!

After a record 143 days without rain, we were treated to 2.5 inches of rain yesterday ... and snow in the mountains this morning.

This picture is of the Flat Iron in the Superstition Mountains in Apache Junction. An unusual sight indeed!

Thumbs up Beautiful photo!

What a great shot! Thanks for sharing. My folks were just on the phone from down thereabouts. One of the few times this winter its colder down there than it was up here in MI! I felt so bad for them. Folks were wearing shorts in Meeshigan, lotsa glare from all those bright white legs...

Great shot!

My sister and I will be arriving in A.J. next Sunday, we'll have the same view as your photo from my folk's house - looks like you took this picture from my parents back yard!

BTW, my parent's call the mountain the "Steam Ship". And take a peek at my Avatar, "The Tube" is pictured with the "Flat Iron/Steam Ship" in the background.

Wow! Amazing picture, we did the loop trail last year around those mountains during Christmas break. Porky are you staying at the state park there?

No ... we're staying at Canyon Vistas in Gold Canyon ... the Superstitions are just across the highway.

The photo was taken from the Goldfield Ghost Town ... a local tourist trap ... but it has a great view.

Snow in the Desert

My wife and I went up to Cave Creek north of the Valley and took a bunch of snow in the desert photos too. For living in the desert for over 25 years, this was so surreal. Won't have to worry about what images to use for Christmas cards. :-)

Another picture of the Superstition Mountains a friend of ours took. Snow is especially nice from a distance!

Brad ... I like the cactus-in-the-snow photo ... unreal!

Later in the day, I climbed Silly Mountain and took this pan of the Flat Iron. It was about 3:30 ... and the snow was already melting at a pretty quick clip. I was surprised to see a hefty amount of snow still up there this morning.

By the way, the Apache Trail Highway was choked with traffic yesterday (usually it is quiet). I think everyone in Phoenix woke up with the same idea ... everyone wanted to play in the snow. What a zoo!

We were trudging around in 8 inches of snow north of Carefree/Cave Creek on the Bartlett Dam Rd. and it was unreal. Kids were making snowmen and putting them on the hoods of cars, they were also throwing snow in the beds of pick-ups to take back to town and snowball fights were everywhere. On the way back to Phoenix, we came across the Carefree Highway to Interstate 17 and the traffic on the northbound side was going about 5 MPH and was backed up for 10 miles with folks going to see and play in the snow. Sure glad we got an early start.

I forget the formula for figuring out inches of snow to the equivilent of rainfall. Its great that it did snow because as the snow melts, it will bew absorbed slowly. A downpour just runs off and doesn't soak in.

I think a foot of snow is an inch of rain...
