Sleeping on a Late Model Couch

I searched the Forums a couple different ways and couldn't find a thread that I could identify as pertaining to type of couch we have. So then I searched the forums looking for which one to post this in and couldn't find anything it seems to fit. So I chose off topic, which it isn't. I just don't know what topic it is on.

Those of you who are still reading this are the perservering types whose advice I need.

We may have another couple traveling with us in a couple weeks. Since it's my daughter and son-in-law, I don't feel the need to be gracious and let them have our bed. However I'm also not cruel enough to sentence them to the couch in is current form. When the couch is open in it's bed configuration, there is something akin to a canyon or glacier crevasse running lengthwise down the middle. One false move while laying in bed and the sleeper will require extrication by a professional mountain rescue team.

Has anyone found a comfortable solution to this delema other than having a rescue team on call?

How about one on the couch, one on the dinette/bed? Would that be bad, splitting them up? Or put them both on the dinette bed, at least they would be sleeping across the crevices.

Thanks. That might work as a last resort, however the dinnette is ussually in the possession of our two cats at night, On top of that their litterbox is under it. But there are work arounds for that. Thank goodness they are also cat people.

I slept on my goucho for a few days...never again in its current form. I have looked for alternatives as well, but short of replacing the foam and choosing a more giving upholstery fabric, there isn't much that can be done. Need the scratch for that, but it is on my list. I thought about changing it out and doing recliners as well, but I'm not enamored of that idea either. The other solution for the couch is to buy a topper at walmart that can be stowed during the day. It will still feel lumpy, but not as bad.

Now, I don't feel like I'm the only one. One thought I've had is to try to cut a piece of foam the length of the couch with a triangular cross section to fill the gap, and then cover the whole thing with some sort of topper. That stuff can go in the back of the TV during the day. I'm not sure how to cut the insert, but I do know that large chunks of foam can be pretty pricey. Therefor I better figure out how before I start on a big piece.

By the way, you have a nice looking trailer.

At one time I had a 23' trailer that had no bed and only a fold out couch to sleep on every night. I purchased a foton mattress that could be rolled up and stored in the truck bed or just draped over the back and seat portion of the couch during the day. If I remember correctly. it was about 3 inches thick and it was called a "full" (size) when laid flat.
After that addition I slept like a baby. A really big baby!

You may consider a well built air mattress that can be stored when they aren't traveling with you.

We'll be faced with the same problem come October at Talledega Superspeedway and while the couch is a great sleeper I agree that it's not too comfy for two for the reasons mentioned.
The taller air mattresses have seemed to me to be an option rather than have a tall person sleep on the dinette; however, we shall see. We can at least have the mattress option available for them to decide when they arrive.

The modern designs of the couches, don't foster sleeping comfort. My old Hi-Lo couch had a flat back and a flat seat. When it was put down into its bed mode, it was absolutely flat and the back and seat would meet together. Fold my nice leather sofa in my newer Classic down and you have bumps and other styling feature which won't let the sofa really get flat. Bottom line my son who slept on it last year said it was pretty uncomfortable. You really need some kind of topper that will make a flat surface and smooth out all of the design irregularaties that make it look pretty.

I would get a "late model dog " to sleep on the couch, naw the pooch is probably smarter than that.

I am going to investigate a couple ideas, if I come up with anything worth while, I will post it. I am thinking that I should go with my life long instincts. "If you let a guest get too comfortable, they stay too long."

Let the daughter have the couch and give the son-in-law a sleeping bag and let him have the floor

before I made a permanent bed for the front of our I used egg crate foam about an inch or two thick that went over the cousins and covered the cracks. I never noticed the cracks and we had 3 different ones as it was 3 cushions that made the bed, when folded down.

Our friends also use it on their fold down couch for their kids.. It's cheap and a quick fix. And not to comfortable so they won't want to leave.

How about going to K-mart and buying a twin size memory foam topper and cutting it to fit the couch, place it over the couch then put on sheets. The twin size topper is probably about 60-70 bucks and you can fold it up and put it in a shrink wrap bag for storage. Happy Camping!

Thanks! I'm gearing up to reseal the seams with Acryl-R, to include the rub rails. I've also noticed a few spots of corrosion, so will be studying the methods of containment.

On topic, I did buy a walmart topper for the goucho. I plan on changing the upholstery (and hopefully the shape) of the goucho and dinette, so will see what happens.

The PO of our Sovereign pulled out the gaucho, and replaced it with a pair of chair beds.

They're from Ikea, and contain a metal frame and a mattress which makes them quite comfortable as chairs, but surprisingly comfortable as beds. Another advantage is that they do not have to BOTH be deployed if you only have one sleep-over guest.

And also, if you are using them every night, they are quite easy to unfold in beds, or return to the chair design. The operation of doing this is spring-aided, so doesn't require tremendous strength.

There is a sofa version, but I have never sat in it or laid down on it, but we do like the chair ones. The covers can also be bought separately, if you get tired of the colour, or change decor.
